John Hallmen, one of my Flickr contacts uses inexpensive manual lenses for reverse-mounted magnification, mounted on a telescoping auto-extension tube. This Flickr page shows several of his single image results, and a few photos of his set-up:

Look through Hallmen's Flickr pages. He also uses a Canon MP-E 65-mm macro lens, and a few other set-ups. Much of his work is focus-stacked.

His telescopic extension tube is pretty interesting, I bet that they are hard to find. The little lenses are pretty cool too but I am sure also to find, 15 aperture blades, don't think I have ever come across a lens with more than 8 or 9.

I agree that that telescopic extension tube is likely hard to find (& likely pricey as well).... As for lenses with lots of aperture blades, I have several, all older preset designs though & longer focal length as well......

Interesting... I've got a couple of Vivitar 2X macro converters. Wondering it I took out the elements on one if it would essentially become a focusing helicoid like this ? For those not familiar with the Vivitar 2x converters. They are 2x teleconverters that , when used with a 50mm lens, can be focused to life size...Here is a link to a Nikon mount one on eBay

Tele-Converters contain simple optics; true extension tubes contain NO optics.

Does the Vivitar 2X Macro Focusing Lens Tele-Converter contain optics?

Yes it does...This TC has a built in focusing helicoid that extends the unit out to be able to capture life sized images with a 50mm lens attached. As you turn the ring, the unit extends (like the Oly unit) If you only turn it half way, the image would be 1/2 life size. It's only when it isn't turned at all that it is a 2x TC & able to focus to infinity. Google it for reviews, et al...It can only be acquired used since it isn't made any more. Kenko also made & marketed one.

Yes it does.
That means each TC contains a minimum of two more optical surfaces, most likely uncoated, and uncorrected, which will diminish image resolution.

But, if I can take out the elements,as I said, it would effectively make it an adjustable extension tube.

Got it! That makes sense. Missed that in your earlier post (I should not read UHH when I have a headache).

Damn, can't find my JIS screwdrivers....Have to order another set...Oh, this 2X TC is a 7 element Multicoated TC... Pretty good for macro considering, but has a lot of fringing & CA at distance...Since I have two (had 3 & sold one) I'm not worried about taking out the elements as I will have a perfectly useable variable extension tube
