My latest results following the advice concerning ISO. Weather is still very overcast.
ISO set at 6400 f=8 SS varied between 1/800 and 1/2000.
I guess things will improve with better light and more practice.

Heavily overcast days can be a drag, especially with a slower lens. I do like shooting on bright overcast days because, I think, the colors are more saturated and the shadows not so harsh. Exposure is a problem when shooting against the sky. How much did you crop these?
Cropping increased size of subject by about a half. It was really to centre the subject.
