Winged adult Leafhopper Assassin bug (Zelus renardii), a true bug with a curved proboscis, which you can see slung under bug's head. The pointed snoot is used to pierce insects, and drain their bodily fluids. 1:1 magnification (life-size).
Photographed in my garden, Long Beach CA.
Hand-held Nikon D5000 at ISO 400, with Nikkor 105G macro lens, 1/200-sec at f/22, open shade & Nikon SB-600 speedlight with O-Flash 3/4-circle Fresnel prism attachment.

Interesting photo and narrative. A regular nightmare for their prey. 8-)
Great shot! Are these bugs all over the US or just in certain regions?

I believe Assassin bugs are fairly universal.
What a great photo. Do you always use flash?

Yes. My ISO/shutter duration/aperture combination allows subdued background exposure, while my speedlight properly illuminates my subject. My hand-held field macro set-up:
