I have been shooting in my garden, trying my hand at capturing birds in flight. I set my camera at ISO 800 f8 which gave a speed of 1/200. First I got fuzzy pictures of my garden, later I started getting the odd tail, then joy of joys I got a shot that was vaguely recognisable as a bird. Obviously the speed of the shutter is too slow, but what else can I do to capture these little birds in flight. They are no more than 5 yards away. The attached are my best results!!!.

It would help to know what camera and lens you are shooting with.

OK! It appears that you are working in low light levels with a lens that is not too fast: f/4.5 at the wide end and f/5.6 at full zoom. This will, of course, put a lot of pressure on you to increase your ISO or open your aperture so that you can shorten your shutter duration. In other words go to ISO 1600 or f/5.6 and you can get 1/400 sec. Do both and you can get 1/800 sec.

Don't be too afraid of the higher ISOs if you can get good exposures and you can fill the frame with the subject. ISO 3200 will get you acceptable pictures using strong Post Processing noise reduction and if you can get well exposed pictures that don't need cropping. Avoid using "High ISO Noise Reduction" as it will slow down your burst rate.

Be alert for better lighting at different times of the day due to differing sun angles.

Hhope this helps. Keep shooting!

Thanks Birdpix for your advice which I shall work on. The one point I can't use is the 'sun angles' because the sun is away in the USA on its holidays. In the UK its solidly overcast. Thanks for a most useful addition to Uhg in BOW/BIF Brian
