Hi all,
I was wondering what (if any) lens I could buy that focuses close enough to be able to photogragh my baby when she's only a foot or two away from me.

The problem I'm having is she's a mamma's girl so she's always near me or on me and I miss a lot of cute moments because I can't back up fast enough or when she sees me backing up she stops the ultra cute thing she's doing... And even if I am far enough away, as soon as I go to take her picture she runs to me!

I was eyeing the 40mm? Would it work?? I think the distance is 6" but would she fit in the frame from 2 feet away?? I shoot with a D7000

Yes...short lenses will be able to get babies in...but...she will be distorted looking.

So I'll get the shot but she'll look weird? Ha ha... How distorted are we talking? Any better suggestions?

Put the D7k aside and get yourself a compact P&S with a wide lens.

Here is an example of what focal length does to faces and body parts:

Many lenses focus VERY close. I was shooting a bouquet of flowers with my 20mm Sigma and could see when one of the petals was touching the lens and it was perfectly in focus.

Use a P&S as someone else said OR....

Put your camera on a tripod...with a 10 second timer (or shutter release), sit with her on a blanket or whatever and fire away....and if you wanted to use a 35 or 40mm lens...then you'd be far enough away to get good depth of field and minimal distortion.

By the way...what lenses do you have now?

It's not the lens really....but the distance that does it.

You have to get her away from you to take a shot if you don't want to distort reality.

I have an old 35-105, a 70-300 vr and an 85mm 1.8. And put my d7000 away??? Torture! Ha ha.. the tripod won't work because I just wasn't to capture those moments and she's an active 19 month old.

Bummer. Thanks for the advice though! I don't want to waste money on a lens that won't work.

I see you have the 85mm F1.8, that's a wonderful lens and should get you quite close. Some creative cropping could get the shot you want pretty easily and the D7000 has the resolution to get that done.
Have fun!
