Since you all helped me make the decision of which camera I wanted, can you give me some insight on batteries? The package I got only included one battery. I would like at least two or three more. I have been looking and there are quite a few that are aftermarket besides the original Canon ones. Do any of you use the generic ones? The price difference is huge, but I am concerned about quality. Are there any of the less expensive brands that are good quality? I love the new camera!! The pictures are beautiful...what little I have done so far...I just got it yesterday!

There is going to be a big debate about this...opinions vary, but I'll give you my own.

I don't buy aftermarket batteries for one reason...they have a high potential for not holding charges as well as the OEM ones, they have a potential for getting less life before failure, and other issues.

I hate paying for real Canon batteries but....I do it...others may have other experiences.

NOTE: be careful!! Even from the big camera stores you MIGHT get a counterfeit battery!!

When you buy one...make sure it's real by checking the markings; Canon batteries are (I think) all serialized.

Flip a coin. Many members wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole, and many members love them. I'm in the latter camp. I've been using them for years with no problem. You can get a battery, charger, and car charger adaptor for less than the price of an OEM battery. I've been getting the Wasabi Power brand from Amazon lately.

You might not need as many batteries as you think. You get lots of shots from one battery, and then you switch to another. I've never need more than two for any one camera.

I have used batteries from alternative resellers ever since my 10D and have NEVER EVER had any trouble, think about it, if they were faulty, caused damage they would never sell them as no one would buy them.

I also use Meike and Hahnel battery grips, you look at them and tell me if you see a difference between Canons/Nikons and them.

Just buy reputable makes, who would question Hahnel

I agree

I have 2 D7000s and Canon 60D with battery grips and can shoot all day weddings and never change batteries

Checkout Batterybuyer.com, I have bought my batteries from them and no problems yet.

If you buy a 3rd party battery, buy from a reputable dealer so that you can return it if there are any problems - there is no warranty on batteries (usually) and there are lots of "counterfeit" batteries out there.

I bought an after-market battery and it works fine. Before going out for anything more than a few back yard photos, I charge both of them. The Canon goes in my camera and the cheapie in my bag. That gives me a needed "spare tire" if necessary and lets me finish the day. At home, I charge both of them and put the Canon back in my T3i. Works for me.

Though I like the Meike grips (and other off brands) they are plastic framed and the Canon Grip for the 5DII is Magnesium framed just like the body.

I have a "spare tire" I've been trying to get rid of for years. :D

Ditto that. That's why my avatar is a head shot instead of a profile.

I have 3 batteries, 1 OEM that came with T3I and 2 generic ones that I got on Amazon. Both batteries and charger was approx. $10.00. I have not noticed any difference between them. All 3 hold charge about same amount of time and all 3 charge very fast in the AC chargers. I don't have a car charger for the camera. Would like to get one eventually.

I purchased five extra with a charger for less then an OEM. I use them two at a time in a grip for my T3i and have no issues. I did the same with my XTi and never had a problem. When I think about it, what if I did? I'd only be out a few dollars unlike an OEM. I always carry extra in my pocket when out with my camera.

I've had mixed results. My "brand X" batteries work fine, but I tested them on a professional battery analyzer and they only measure 60% of their advertised capacity. Expect capacity to be seriously overstated - in my case, cells aren't even made with the high capacity they were advertising.

In other words, you get what you pay for.

I use 3 bodies and have 2 sets of batteries per body. Most are Canon batteries a couple are aftermarket and I have never notoiced any difference between the canon and aftermarket in terms of life or performance.
I use battery grips on thye 50D and 60D and have never ever had to switch batteries in the field. I always carry fresh charged batteries in the camera and a pair of back ups per rig, as well as extra memory cards.

I would, under NO circumstances buy anything camera related from China, Maylasia, Indonesia

Amazon good, Ebay not so much for batteries
