A Barbary Lion now apparently extinct in the wild, distinctive by its huge size and its equally large black mane, The difference in appearance is amazing compared to the more common lions I have seen on the game reserves of South Africa.
Apparently these are the breed of Lions the ancient Roman's used in the gladatorial arenas.
I post processed in Photoshop because of the heavy wire around him in the background.
I took this photo at Port Lympne Wildlife Park in Kent, England, Port Lympne Wildlife Park is renowned for their successful breeding programs of rare animals outside of their natural home country. ..... Nikon D3100, Sigma 150-500mm F5.6-6.3, 1/200sec, F6.3, ISO 800
Barbary Lion
Great photo of an majestic beast Garry.

Thanks for your kind comments, and he certainly was a magnificent example of a Barbary Lion, the only word I can think of when I first saw him was 'breathtaking' just hope the photo does him justice.
Great photo, I sure would not want to battle in an arena with him.

Beautiful animal! What intensity he has in his gaze.
WOW! That's a great shot and great processing. I just bet you look like lunch to the lion.
Have you tried B & W or Sepia on this?
Talk about the look. Love this photo!

I thought exactly the same when I first saw him, so glad there was 3 fences between us, not so sure he was as happy as I was though. Thanks for your comments

He certainly was intense, I think he saw in me a totally different context to what I saw in him. Thanks for your comments.

Thank you very much for your kind comments, I have tried both Sepia and B&W, will post the image up as Barbary Lion 2, I should have done that in the first place, ah well, never mind.
