My grandson is very involved in Taekwondo...up to the national level. At local/regional matches many times I can get within a few feet of the mats. At higher level matches I might get equally close half the time, but often from bleachers (high school gyms). Does anyone have experience shooting these types of events? I have a D3100 and am willing to get what I need to shoot these events. Another observer shoots with the same camera and the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 and it seems to be excellent, but a lot of bucks.
I would think that would be a nice lens when you are close, from the stands I would want a 70-200.
Understood. The 24-70 at f2.8 seems to be great because of the usually poor lighting combined with shutter/ISO requirements to clearly freeze the action. I believe the 70-200 is alsoavailable at f2.8...but again $$$$. And I thought golf and skiing were expensive!

That is an awesome piece of glass. You will never out grow it. And it will hold most of it's value too. If you say you can get close to the action, that would be the lens. I use it for weddings when the lighting isn't very good. Always can count on great shots.

I echo Erv's comments above. If you're interested in getting consistent results in less than ideal lighting, you won't be disappointed.
Why don't you go to lensgiant.com and rent one ! they have a couple of different models and you will fall in love with this lens. I have used it for high school wrestling and it was awesome! try renting from lens giant for those big meets! awesome company!
