Crocodile
I think this is an American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) is a species of crocodilian found in the Neotropics. It is the most widespread of the four extant species of crocodiles from the Americas. Populations occur from the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of southern Mexico to South America as far as Peru and Venezuela. It also lives within many river systems on Cuba, Jamaica, and Hispaniola. Within the United States, the American crocodile's habitat is limited to the southern half of Florida, and has an estimated population of 2,000. The habitat of the American crocodile consists largely of coastal areas. It is larger than some other crocodile species, with some males reaching lengths of 6.1 m (20 ft).

Alligators have a long snout with upward facing nostrils at the end; this lets them breathe while the rest of the body is underwater. The young can be distinguished from adults by the bright yellow stripes on the tail; adults have dark stripes on the tail.

No doubt you kind people will tell me if I am wrong!

Gator mum,

A terrible image heavily cropped; a case of the wrong lens at the time.

Seen way out in a lake at Chester Zoo England, it's only when I looked at the image I saw the youngsters.

Pretty good shot and information on the American Croc... As far as Gator's go, I usually just figure that a 12 foot Gator is a bit older than a 2 ft Gator... but you are correct that their coloring changes with age... they become much darker and uniform in their coloring as they grow older. Many people don't know that the most dangerous predator of a small Gator is a large Gator. Nowadays in the southern part of the state they also have Pythons to deal with... I wonder if they will not become endangered again.

Well, California has beautiful beaches also... problem is that you can't get into the water as it is tooooooo cold!

Florida is kinda flat but has the best ocean water in the Lower 48... South Florida to be more specific... Hard Call, maybe you will have to make two trips, South Florida, including Miami's South Beach, the Everglades, Naples and of course the Keys... and a second trip out West...
