Lately there has been a lot of discussions about light meters and I have never used one. A guy down the street who's even older than me isn't feeling well and he gave me a new Sekonic L308S light meter. I have never used one and I don't know if this is even worth learning as I don't know if it's a good one or not. I need some advice-anyone care to help me? Thanks, Mike

It's worth learning about it and the L308S is probably pretty decent.

The L308s is a fine meter, oldcoach. Whether it will be worthwhile to you or not depends on where your photography is going to take you! For ordinary snapshots, it is not too necessary. But if you want to be more serious about your photos, knowing the lighting conditions you're dealing with, and being able to accurately measure said light can be invaluable.

What he saidÂ…

I bought the L-308s and use it occasionally. I would probably get the L-358 if I had a do-over because the L-358 measures ambient and flash simultaneously and indicates the percentage of flash in the total exposure. I paid retail price for my 308s. But, if someone had given me one I would have been tickled.

I bought one a few months ago and they are very good, sometimes very useful for an incident light reading where the in built one in the camera can get it wrong

I have a L308s and find it easy to use and helpful. I have been doing group photos for several local youth groups and I find that the meter is nice to ensure that I have even lighting over a 10x20 backdrop. I use the meter to check for even lighting both horizontally and vertically at the edges and in the middle. It helps me place my lights in such a way that the middle is not significantly more brightly lit than the edges. I have found the L308s easy to use and quick as well. You need a wireless remote for you stobes/flashes to do this effectively. The L308s cannot trigger lights itself like some light meters.
