Man am I rusty. Shooting at 2x found this female today. She kept jumping onto the lens and would not sit still. I got 1 out of 10 shots. But happy with the way the eyes are turning out. Higher the Magnification the shallower the DOF. No diffraction in the eyes for a change. Also some of the eye color is coming thru. They change from green/blue/purple depending on how the light is hitting them

Remind us as to your lens & set-up.

Hey Douglass - For this shot I'm using my D7000 with Tokina 100-mm macro lens with the Raynox DCR-250 attached. Gives me just shy of 2X I believe. I had been using this set up with 36mm of tubes and was not happy with the eyes. First time using without the tubes and Much Happier with the eyes. Also retaining more DOF.

MWD in inches. 8/16th

Interesting combination. I may just have to seriously consider adding a Raynox DCR-250.

Your Nikon D7000 sensor is 23.6-mm (.93-inches) wide. Your captured field is .5-inches wide. .93/.5 = 1.86:1 mag. (1.9x life-size) at MFD.

Thanks. I thought 1.9:1, and you confirmed. Thanks, will keep the formula for future assessments.

You get close to 3:1 using 36mm tubes, the 100mm lens and the raynox 250 together. But with the jumpers the eyes are a little cloudy/diffraction or flare I'm guessing from using the tubes. Just the DCR250 and 100mm lens the eyes are cleaner, I have better DOF, at 2:1. You need a little more flash as the Raynox 250 cuts into your light. I think you'll like the combo.

Yeah, I'd hate to get results like this! ;-)

What fantastic photos. I love the colour you are getting in the eyes.

I now find myself fantasizing about finding spiders.
I'm not sure at what level that is wrong but it's a change I suppose!

I am so envious of you all with your insect infested locations . I should join a cloud appreciation forum I guess.

Mars has more life than the UK at this time of year (without ripping stuff up to find them which just destroys their environment).

Spring can't come soon enough!

I really like the look of the DCR250. Do you think that it would help my setup (EOS7D + 100mm Macro + O-flash. I like the idea of close macro (~1.9:1) but reversing lenses seems a bit cumbersome and of course exposes my lens elements.

A word of caution to folks that want to purchase the DCR 250. I also use this with 36mm of tubes most of the time. At max magnification your working distance is reduced to 1 inch or less. Any hand movement slight breeze or subject movement is Ten Fold at this close range. You also need full power on your flash if mounted on your camera, so you Must move the flash down near the front of your lens. I should also mention I get at least 90% and higher of my shots with just the 100 macro lens alone. With the above mention setup/36mm tubes, 100mm macro lens and the DCR 250 attached to the end I'm shooting 10%. Even when I'm doing good I only get about 25%. Mind you I hand hold, this would work Great on a tripod, but I don't freeze or kill my subjects. Hand holding is extremely difficult.
Morkstar, you can use any brand of older lens to reverse stack. I now have a handful of older 35 to 50mm lens that I reverse stack. These were given to me. On ebay you can find a 50mm F/1.8 for $20. Start at 50mm, 35mm is 3x and it's hard to find smaller subjects of interest, not to mention less than an inch for working distance. 50mm reversed on the 100mm is perfect for 2:1Try to get with the bottom lens cap as you my need this to lock open the aperture.
