A wonderful tribute to some very heroic men who had to fight for a key position that was a crucial base for our air force on the way to victory over Japan.
Thank you for posting this.
Thanks for the Post...An old neigbbor of mine served on Iwo...has since passsed....he recalled in amazing detail the sounds of the bullets swishing all around him, overhead a few inckes, along side of mi....raining bullets is how he put it the whole time he was on the beach, and moving forward. Gave me chills then and again now....real men and love of country...Never forget!

Where did you serve and what type of aircraft were you a crewman on?
I was an air crew instructor at the Naval Air Reserve Training Unit, at NAS Alameda, CA. for four years and crewed on S-2 series aircraft. (June '63 to June '67)
When that four year enlistment was up I went into the ready reserve and drilled at NAS Moffett Field, Sunnyvale, CA. and was a P-3 Fight Engineer. (June '67 to June '74)
Coast Guard HU-16....twin engine albatrose....1876 cu inches of noisy burping power...was Aviation Electrician by training, then went to radios on board, radar nav....almost a joke....flight engineer....also crewman on HH 52 ...not a fan of helecopters. stationed at CG Air Station San Juan. PR....crash landed at Ramey AFB in western PR once....good fire rescue response....great club on base...but that's another story....1969-71
