Is it best to do a regular format or a low level format on a SD Disc?

Format it in the camera you will use it with.

I normally format it in the camera....curious as to difference in formats if done via computer. At times I will format in computer and then again in the camera.

Regular format is fine (and all you need) unless you are experiencing weirdness like lost clusters, disk errors, SD card not recognized by camera, etc... If that is the case replace the dang thing.

A quick format just wipes the table of contents so that all sectors are marked as free space, while a low level format actually erases each sector.

I agree with Nikon "Format it in the camera you will use it with".

Formating should be done in the camera that the card is used in.

I always format in the camera instead of just erasing. Read that somewhere. Not the computer. Does anyone do just erasing? And is that ok instead of formatting?

I should clarify, erasing the card in camera not the computer. I have the option to either erase or format in the camera (Olympus E5) it may be different in Nikon or Canon. I always format but would erase still leave options to retrieve pictures if I erased? Maybe Nikon or Canon does not give that option. Just wondering. Thanks

You should never format in the computer unless you are experiencing problems with the card. In which case you can use either format method but then must format again in the camera. As someone else said, if you're experiencing problems, just get a new card and play safe.

Any time I format in the computer I in turn format it again in the camera. I also never just delete photos on the card from the computer, only the camera. And yes, I realize that formatting erases everything. I'm speaking of individual pics on the card.

The logical reason for formatting rather than deleting shots singly is that when you format a card you delete lots of files in one write operation.

Deleting 100 shots singly is 99 more write operations than 1 format.

Some may wonder: How am I writing if I am erasing?
The answer in short: You are writing to the table of contents that the space is available on the device.

I still wouldn't worry about it too much, these days you get a lot more write cycles than you used to. About 100,000 or so and the electronics inside the SD card is designed to even out the wear and tear.

I never let Windows (or Linux) format my SD cards. The camera does a more reliable job if you ask me.

If you delete files from the card you fragment the card because you are only making the space occupied by the deleted file available. This is fine if you just delete one or two files as you shoot. When you format the card in camera, you free up all of the card space and new files will then not be fragmented, as they will be written to the card sequentially and "whole" if I can use that term, instead of filling in the gaps created by erasing files.

Are you keeping up at the back.......?
