Bridgekeeper: What is the cost of a one terabyte external drive?

Arthur: (brief pause) What do you mean, a Solid State drive or a Hard Drive?

Bridgekeeper: (confused) Well...I don't know...AAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!

Classic! Great update to maintain relevancy!

My SanDisk "Extreme Portable" external SSD drive just failed after less than a year of use. Does anyone have any positive experience with other brands? I'm looking for a 1TB capacity drive, and see quite a few in the $150 - $200 price range. I've noted some good online reviews of the Samsung and Seagate brands. Anyone have firsthand experience - positive or negative - with these or any other brands? Thanks.

I’ve used 1TB G-Technology for 2 years with no issues. It’s quite small and light but does have a ridiculously short USB connection cable, but I haven’t found any issue for travel.

I also have every episode of Monty Python and the Holy Grail on it and still have ~930GB of free space for photos and videos.

Fellow Hogs,

I have a high regard for your vast knowledge of photography.
My background covers many types of cameras but almost nothing from the
modern age.
I have a future project that will require the highest level of sharpness I can produce, with reason. As usual, I do not have an unlimited budget.
Most full frame dslr's would probably work. This project will involve
a lot of landscape shots. I am not locked into any one brand of camera.
Almost everything will be shot on a tripod. What would you recommend?
I'm sure you will have questions for me.
Thanks in advance.

Joe, all good advice provided by others. As you're in NJ, the only additional suggestion I have is to go to Unique Photo (as Sue? recommended) and rent a camera/lens combo prior to purchase, especially if they have a D850 available. I've previously rented lenses for my D750 and Unique has been great. FYI...I have no affiliation with Unique and bought my D750 from B&H but have had good luck with rentals from Unique.

Good luck.

Definitely the 24-120. I have the D750 and the 24-120 is my walk-around and travel lens, even though I also have the 24-70 2.8 and other lenses. The 24-120 is small enough and the extra reach is worthwhile. Additionally, the constant f/4 aperture is a plus.

You seem "focused" (pun intended) on the extra stop of the 24-85. You don't mention if you plan on shooting in low light but would ask if you need the extra stop. I don't miss it on the 24-120 for travel but if needed, you could choose slower shutter speed or play with ISO to achieve close to same.

I previously had the Nikon D600 as my first FF camera and loved it. Good Luck!

I agree with suggestions of 28-300 lens as it will be most versatile. However, based on your subjects of landscape, portrait, and street, and if you only spend a day or two at Kerala preserve, you may not need the extra reach. I also have the D750 with both 24-120 and 28-300 and prefer the former as I also focus (pun intended) mostly on landscape and street subjects.

I've been to India numerous times including most of the areas you're visiting. In addition to a travel tripod, I'd suggest camera/lens protection such as camera bag and UV/clear filter as you'll have considerable dust in the northern areas and suggest desiccant packs/bags as the south will be very hot/humid. A large ziploc bag can be great for both.

Enjoy the trip!

Has anyone had experience with Sirui monopods? I'm looking at getting a carbon fiber monopod and I am seeing some by this company that look interesting. I don't recall hearing about this company before so I'm hoping someone on UHH has some experience with their carbon fiber monopods.

I've had the P-236 monopod for four years and a Sirui CF tripod. They're both very good products and have had no issues with either. The most challenging thing is the actual pronunciation of Sirui!

Hi
Please help if you can with my limited ability to describe what I think I saw.
Recently I saw a camera (and a special setting on that camera) that allows you to
create an image that looks just like a coloring book....

Hello - The Nikon 750 has a special effect setting called "Color Sketch", which you get to by selecting "Effects" on the mode dial. I accidentally selected it once and the resulting image was quite interesting.

I knew the title would elicit some good responses! I'm late to the party but some additional thoughts...

1. Difference between men and women - perfection vs. connection. My wife is same and just wants to share pics and doesn't care about composition, quality, etc. She tells me I spend too much time taking pics and ruining hikes, walks, etc. I even bought her a good P/S camera but she didn't use - only wants to use her phone to share and post quickly.
2. Already stated, but explain to her why she SHOULDN'T post to FB during an outing or vacation. This may reduce her need to post immediately. I don't have or want FB but understand her need to connect.
3. Last Christmas, I gave my wife a picture book (snapfish, shutterfly, whatever) which had vacation/travel pics. She loved it and now lets me buy any gear I want ("...but I need it for better pics of us honey"). Since I mainly take landscape pics, she said there werent "enough pictures of us".
4. Take more pics of her.
5. I think repeated but buy her a good Bluetooth selfie stick.
6. I'm in next town over (LV) so it may be something in the water!

Good luck

Due to medical issues and age (73), I am becoming very limited with my mobility. I find myself taking photos from my car, parking lots or road sides. Do any of you Hedgehogs have recommendation for a tripod that I can attach to my car window? I just order a Tamron 150-600 for my Sony A77ii.

Thanks,

Rice Sock! My wife has neck issues and always travels with a homemade rice sock, which she microwaves to warm and applies to neck. I use it similar to bean bag over car window, on window frame with window rolled down, on car roof or hood (engine off!) and when I don't bring travel tripod. Other advantages:
Works great with cameras with tilting screens (I have Nikon D750) and can be used as ground "pod",
I don't have to pack more photo stuff,
Use as dessicant for camera/lens if needed in high humidity areas,
Costs nothing (which makes wife happy too!)

Good luck!

I took this shot earlier this year with my Nikon D600 while on vacation in Panama. I like it but can't decide which is more impactful - color or B&W. Unfortunately, I shot in JPEG instead of RAW (somewhat newbie to RAW). I've included the original files so the meta data is available. The photos have minimal post-processing (also a newbie in LR).

I just joined the forum recently and would appreciate any and all opinions (and even some sarcasm I see on the forum!) on:
B&W vs color
Composition
Bokeh
even....is it a good photo?
etc.

Thanks!
