I have a farm in the middle of Illinois. I had planned to go there for the eclipse. I recently downloaded a map of the course of the eclipse and found out that I'm about 15 miles outside the "total darkness" range. How much difference will that make?

For those of you who know the area, Effingham is right on the north edge of the path, and I'm 15 miles north of Effingham.

For the 2017 eclipse we were about 10 miles off the centerline. Totality was about 30 seconds shorter than the center. It lasted over two minutes which was time for photography. Outside the totality band is not the same experience. There would not be a “Diamond Ring” moment. Of course you need a clear day. Thousands of people traveled to eastern Idaho and western Wyoming for the reliable summer weather.

I spent two days there touring the falls from both sides. If you take the boat ride through the falls it is more like a fire hose than a mist. The boat provides dry bags and warns you before you enter the wet zone. I did not even attempt to use my camera with a sleeve during that part of the boat trip.

I was in Norway last March. Great northern lights photos are possible with an iPhone 13 pro. The ships photographer collected the best shots submitted from passengers. Of thirty some entries my iPhone was 3rd. Top two were top of the line Sonys shooting long exposures on tripods. The hardest part about photographing the lights is finding them.

I frequently use a 13 pro iPhone for a camera backup. I shoot in raw and have no problem using PS camera raw for post processing. Camera Raw is identical to LR develop module. I use the same work flow as with my Sony raw files.
I recently returned from a 10 day trip to northern Norway. The iPhone raw photos of the northern lights were superior to my Sony photos.

When I travel in Europe I carry a Rx100 va and a Rx100 vi. The six is my all around camera and I keep the 5a as a backup and for use in lowlight and indoor situations. When traveling in parks and in Africa I substitute an hx99 for the 5a to get the extra zoom. Obviously I place a high value on light weight equipment, but the IQ of the Rx100s is excellent. I do not think it is a great sacrifice when compared to my DSLR kits.

I am leaving on another safari in May. Three weeks in South Africa and Botswana. On my last safari I took my DSLRs and lenses. This time I am more interested in the overall experience than the photo opportunity. I will still take photographs but this time I will not be loaded down with camera equipment. I will take my Sony Rx 100 vi (24-200) and my Sony Hx 99 (24-720). Both have excellent Zeiss lenses and both fit easily in my pocket.

No matter what cameras you take, take time to enjoy just being there with the magnificent animals and landscapes.

I have done that trip and I highly recommend traveling light. Especially if you will be on group tours. Some of the waterfall hikes are long with significant vertical. Only recommendation I would add is to try an rx 100 vi. The added zoom really helps frame the waterfalls and geothermal sights. I carried the 100 vi and a rx 100 v as a backup. Used the vi most of the time. Enjoy that beautiful country.

I will be sailing with you next week on the Viking Sky. I will carry my Sony rx 100 vi. Having done two previous trips with Viking, I recommend you go small and light. Their shore excursions move along at a pretty good pace leaving little time for changing lenses. That argues for a zoom. I personally feel safer carrying a pocket camera (than a dslr) in crowded cities. Just my opinions.

I travel outside the US 8-10 weeks per year. I quit flying with my dslr years ago substituting a Canon g3x and g7x. I always carry two cameras on foreign travel. A few months ago I replaced the Canons with a Sony rx 100 5A and a rx 100 6. Great combination and it is really nice to have the same menu system in both cameras. The image quality is excellent and the camera size/weight is amazing. Really a bonus to have the pop up view finder on bright days. Only negative I see is the cost of this combination, but I think it is worth it.

When I checked my old camera bag I discovered that my wife had donated the 1000 DTL to a charity. Sorry I may have misled you.

I have one. Have not used it in years. Stored in old camera bag. It was in great condition the last time I used it, but that was about 25 years ago.

We did this loop last Septemberwith the addition of Lakes Como and Margiorre. The castle in Simione on Lake Garda and the WW1 museum outside Cortina are good photo opportunities. Driving in the Dolomites can be tedious. Drive carefully!
