The same thing happened to me several years ago. I was thinking at the time that I wanted to get into wedding photography, so I asked a very wise local professional photographer if he would take me on as a second shooter for weddings. He told me to go to a local park and carry around the camera equipment I would use for weddings while taking shots. I did, standing out like a sore thumb in the process with two cameras and multiple lenses hanging from my belt and harness. The thought never even occurred to me that my taking shots in a public park would be a problem for anyone. After about a half an hour of taking shots, mostly of trees, birds, squirrels, and rocks, two mothers came up to me and asked me if I had taken shots of their children as they were playing soccer. I had taken a couple of shots of the soccer field, with a wide angle lens. I voluntarily showed them the shots I had taken. To my embarrassment, the shots of the soccer field were horrible, awful shots, out of focus and dark. I had screwed up the shots. The two soccer moms were placated and walked away without hurting me or my gear. The main lessons I learned that day were: 1) Being a professional wedding photographer on your feet for hours must be a lot of hard work, way too hard for this old man. After about a half an hour of walking around the park, carrying all my gear around while taking shots, I was physically exhausted. 2) The only way I ever again would think of taking shots of children’s athletics in a public area, regardless of what my rights as a photographer are, is as a credentialed photographer on assignment. No way I want to be accosted ever again by angry soccer moms without having credentials to show them. 3) Imagine the reaction of a bride if the once in a lifetime shots of her wedding were out of focus and dark? I doubt that she would just turn around and walk away like the two soccer moms had done. No, best to leave wedding photography to physically fit people who know what they are doing.

I agree, it is heartbreaking, and I have not watched any of the Olympics from South Korea because of their dog meat farms. In America, our dogs enjoy protection from abuse under animal cruelty laws. Yet also here in America public officials murder millions of our dogs each year in our animal shelters, at taxpayer expense, under the guise of “animal control.” To me, my dogs, picture annexed, are my family. I think that America should recognize by constitutional amendment that all domesticated animals like dogs and cats have a civil right to life and happiness. I think that such a constitutional amendment is probably the only way to end the slaughter of our dogs and cats in our animal shelters.

Thank you for your kind words. My wife first learned of the Enterprise memorial last winter, through Atlas Obscura. Until Sue told me about it, I did not know about the memorial. It was a surprise for Pop, too, he had not known about it before yesterday either. We waited until yesterday to take Pop there, for the NJ weather to get a little warmer. Still wet and cold here in NJ, though, more like late winter weather than spring.

My wife and I took my father in law, who served in the US Navy during WW II in the Pacific as a landing craft operator, to see the USS Enterprise Memorial in River Vale, NJ. A man from River Vale retrieved the name stern plate of the Enterprise from the scrap heap when the ship was being dismantled in the late 50's, and donated it to his home town, which incorporated it into the town's veteran's memorial. Happy Memorial Day, and thank you to all U.S. veterans for your service to our country.

Sorry, but I am in the camp that says not to do it. I also am an amateur, and recently applied to a local wedding photographer to become a second shooter. He told me to go to a nearby park and walk around with all the photo gear I would be carrying on me at the wedding. At the end of only two hours of lugging my cameras and lenses around the park, I was barely able to catch my breath and was so tired I could not take a clear, unblurred photo of a tree or rock. The experience opened my eyes to just how physically demanding being a wedding photographer actually is. Based on that experience, my advice is to tell your grandson to hire a professional photographer. Those wedding photos are destined to become priceless family heirlooms. If you botch up the photos, you won't get another chance at those once in a lifetime photos, and your grandson's wife and her family probably will never forgive you. The downside of possibly souring relations with your grandson's new wife and her family just is not worth it. I wish you good luck in whatever you decide to do.

I took my cameras out of their bag and went to Brookdale Park in Bloomfield, NJ this morning to give them some exercise. I know that my skills are not on par with most of the regulars on UH, but the only way for me to ever improve is to practice taking shots. I appreciate any critiques or comments to help me improve. Thank you.

Iphone picture of my Ace wearing his new collar. I am only an amateur photographer but love taking pictures. I always have my iPhone with me, and rarely have my DSLRs with me, so most of my recent photos are iPhones. The inconvenience and bulk of carrying the DSLR gear was a game-changer for me. I have sent emails to local professional photographers to ask if I can be a second shooter, for free, so I can use my DSLR gear, but have never received a reply. I also have been asked by neighbors not to take pictures while walking in the street with my DSLR around my neck taking pictures of holiday lawn decorations. So lately my DSLR gear has stayed at home. Such a shame, I much prefer the DSLR photo over the iPhone photo, but it is better to take an iPhone photo than no photo at all.
