Thanks so far.

I think the kicker is going to be, what you do with the smartphone away from home? I can use my laptop at home. Or, what can the smartphone do that my laptop can't or do easier or cheaper, other than make phone calls? :-)

I am in the same situation and it took years to convince me but my granddaughters refuse to look at their email, so grandma had to join the 21st Century and started texting. I still prefer paper books vs eBooks but the phone by the bedside comes in handy for looking up certain items in a book, a region, a foreign word, etc. And waiting in waiting rooms, a phone is handier to read a book on rather than schlepping an 800 page hardcover one through parking garages, up stairs, long hallways, etc. :) You will love yours, guaranteed!

Fastest way of getting rid of Democrats is to suspend voting rights for anyone living on Government hand-outs. They surely would never vote Republican.

The laptop is already communicating with your WiFi Access Point.

Are you SURE you can make this work through an access point?
All I can find points to direct connection between the card and a computing device. If that's the case, then you'd have to make the Lenovo disconnect from your home network before it could connect to the card.

Ok, points to ponder. Since the phone is on wi-fi also and communicates with the card in the camera, why shouldn't the laptop. I even stopped Panda (virus software), maybe I should undo the Win Firewall as well. Will let you know. Thanks!!

Ok, folks, partial success for those who are thinking of getting a Wi-fi card for their D3100. Newer models have this function built in. It now works with my smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S3.
Downloaded the FlashAir app from Toshiba. Turned on the camera, took a few new pics, FLIPPED UP THE MIRROR, held the smartphone pretty close to the camera and lo and behold, the app started scanning for the card, found it, showed me thumbnails of the pictures and asked which ones I wanted to transfer.
So now problem #2, make the card talk to my new Lenovo laptop. So far it has strongly resisted recognizing another wi-fi component. I might have too many already. Chromecast Youtube reader, Roku3, printer, router, Wii, BlueRay player, Internet radio, wireless headphones, Galaxy 3 and 2 laptops.
But never give up! I am just so happy that I can now immediately transfer my photos to another device without taking out the SDHC card.

Downloading a 38 will provide help, officers of the law are very understanding and also armed.
Good luck.

Anna, I'm not sure how to get the card to work, but I'm fairly certain a .357 inch hole bored neatly (assuming you're using wadcutters) through the center of the card will do little to enhance its performance. Good luck!

LOL !

I am ready to load my 38. Is there anyone in this universe who has had success with this Wi-Fi card? I received one for Christmas, after two painful afternoons, I returned it. Then sat around and stewed and decided I wouldn't give up and reordered.
Well, after just spending another 4 hours, nothing doing. The darn thing won't work. There has to be something I am missing. Toshiba suggests using the Live View" feature before transferring the pictures. But, again, nada. I did umpteen checks on the router/network passwords, set-ups, rerouting or not, etc. etc. Nada.
Thanks all!!

What's the consensus regarding flash drives for photo back up? Rich

I am hesitant to store anything I need in years to come
on a DVD since most laptops already do not supply a reader.

(Remember the ever so popular Iomega Zip disks ? Now try to find a reader, grrr).

I see a future without virtually (no pun, grin) any hardware. Now you already use "Office" from the cloud without purchasing the actual software.

PS: Flash drives will hopefully have a longer life span since USB drives are being updated as increased storage demands faster speeds.

I took the hard drives out of the computer, as well as one from an external drive, spent $20. on some gadget that allowed me to hook up the drives as if they were extrernal drives and was able to recover all the data from all three the drives. Sorry, I can't remember what the gadget was called.

I agree with Morning Star. Recently my laptop died, I extracted the hard drive, purchased a $ 7.00 2.5 SATA cable with external case on Ebay into which the hard drive fits. The included USB cable inserts into the new laptop and I was able to retrieve EVERYTHING and now use this old drive as an additional backup.

2.5 SATA cable with USB connect

Thanks breck. I'm not at all familiar with cloud storage. I'd rather use something besides that. I appreciate your feedback.

Cloud storage is the easiest most reliable and you do not have to do anything except get an account with google, amazon, maybe Flickr offers them, Adobe, etc.

Very easy. When you want to save your pictures you just right click and hit "Save As" and the space which comes up you type in the name of your cloud account, i.e. www.adobe.com/cloud/pab20 (imaginary name, grin) and you then can access that account at any time and work with any of your images. Just make believe it is another external drive.
