Read The Digital Negative by Jeff Schewe - easy to find on Amazon. I only shoot raw (in my case, Canon CR2 files) and the reason for doing so are too numerous to list here. I also go to great lengths to "expose to the right" which allows me to maximize 1Ds Mark III and 1Dx tonal ranges. Jeff"s book is a great read and a fantastic reference for understanding principles of digital photography and use of RAW files

I love taking pictures of sunsets, and I get great results with my cellphone because of the wide angle. The colors aren't true but it has been OK.

I think I should get a wide angle lens for my Canon EOS 7D. What should I look for. What are the criteria. I could use some advice.

If you can afford it, the new Canon 11-24 f/4 L is probably the finest wide angle in production.

Try clearing the cache memory and defragmenting your files

You may want to look at Nix Google as its one of the most commonly used solutions for portrait photography.

I received an email from KatzEye: They do not offer focusing screens for the EOS 1DS Mark III or the EOS 1DX. I'll reach out to CPS for recommendations and support.

Hi,

You could reduce the ISO to 400 - 600 range easily on your shots and keep the shuttle speed around 1/100s - 1/125s (on 85mm Len).

Best regards

I used the Auto-ISO which, while I've not compared other ISO settings, tends toward the higher than necessary side

Most of my pictures need quite a bit of depth of field so I generally use smaller f/stops, but this conversation got me thinking (!) and I just ran some tests with my fastest lens, a 75mm f/1.5 Zeiss Biotar, wide open. The camera was on a tripod and I used flash to eliminate any vibrations. This confirmed that when the focus indicator lights up, the subject focused on is tack sharp. Sometimes it may not be a bad idea to bracket focus if the subject allows.

I agree. The tripod definitely helps w/ focus and to ensure human movements which may impede focus are minimized. I will try the focus verification on a tripod and see how it compares to live view

Could help recovery if the camera falls overboard

Canon wants $600 for the GPS for the 1DX. I'll pass. I have the Wi-fi unit which is helpful but Id like to think I know where I am in space-time at any given point.

Thanks for sharing

Excellent. Difunitive evidence of choline in the gene pool. It reminds me of a late George Carlin quote which I am paraphrasing "consider how stupid the average person is and then consider 50% are stupider than that"

Thanks everyone. I will contact B&H and see if the Ec-S will do what I need. I ordered the Zeiss in October (Christmas present to myself) and received it after New Years. I am NOT into iPhone photos and snapshots. I AM in love with legacy portraits on real paper or canvas; stuff that can serve as an heirloom and to capture a families history.

Yes - I likely use Live View >90% of the time when I put the Zeiss Otus on the EOS 1Ds Mark III and probably 70% of time on the EOS 1DX as the latter (according to Zeiss) has a well done focus verification. I also have found it helpful to go to 5x and 10x Live View magnification and nearly always from a fat Gitzo tripod.

I will note that if you run it at f/1.4 to f/2.8 or so, you need to be clear the pinpoint area you want to focus on; otherwise, the DOF scale at wide open is a fraction of an inch and you will wind up w/ a perfectly focused left nostril but eyes that are out of focus.

Thanks again. You all are great

I don't see any for full-frame CMOS for either the 1DX or 1Ds Mark III. I sent katyzeyeoptics an email to find out. Thanks
