I used Lightroom 4.3 to retrieve almost to a normal picture by removen the shadows, still using D-lighting would helped alot when no flash is used.

When you like the town Bodie, an old mine town you can take very nice pictures. It's a ghost town with history.
I came back with roughly 1300 picture in only one day.

To find out what lens is good for your way of picture taken just rent a lens or several get the feel for it during your trip and when you like the lenses buy a new one.
For wide angle shots and as a walk around lens look at the sigma lens 18 - 250 mm or the 10 - 20 mm wide angle F3.5

I like your pictures and I have visit that place my self years ago very picturest.
I like to give you a hint about using the flash.
When you point your flash straight onto your picture field there is a large change to get a shadow when you point the flash up or under an angle you get less shadows like the shadow just above the railing.
