I like the profile image best...
Have taken the liberty to crop and define the profile, by dropping the background and shadow to B&W to give separation, yet giving connection of the overall image
Hindsight... If you had composed the image a bit more to the left allowing the shadow to show a full headshot/hairbun, it would give a good shadow split image effect

...Legacy is a word of question to be defined in a multitude of infinite dimensions... Legacy~Life, is like a Beautiful, Delicate Bubble, immersed in the elements as it travels freely, yet only existing for a minute measure in the universe of time... eventually disappearing into the abyss of infinity to exist forever in the dark

Get yourself a shoulder sling bag, (several choices out there) I'm 71 and do mostly wilderness landscapes, hiking 5-25 miles above 7000 feet. My sling bag accommodates my D80/IR and D750 and three lenses and two extra batteries. You state that weight is an issue... you might do some arm curls with your cameras for some endurance... just kidding!
Seriously, check out some sling bags... B&H has a reasonable selection

Have been a money making pro for nearly 50 years with a slim necessary arsenal... Stick with what you have, shoot, learn, shoot till you wear the body out. The camera does not make the photographer... the photographer makes the photographer

I have recently purchased a D7100 and am looking forward to re-entering the world of the DSLR. My intention is to learn the camera, photography principles, etc.first. I'll stick with jpeg for now, then progress into RAW after I'm better aquainted with my equipment and photographic principles I think a class is in the offing.

Nonetheless, I do like black and white photography and would like to learn more about techniques, camera settings, etc. I'm not sure if shooting jpeg or RAW makes a difference. In short, I'd appreciate sage advice and guidance from UHH!

Thanks in advance!

B&W and Infrared are a preference for me.
If you have the opportunity to pick up a good/cheap/used D80, D90 or later D-model, have it converted to Infrared (www.kolarivision.com) $275.00 to $350.00 for conversion.
Having an IR camera is a great tool to have for B&W opportunities.
Also B&W with selective color is also effective (Color Strokes app)

Might start with a pinhole camera... No camera or lens ID necessary!

For landscapes, a wide angle lens is not always the best choice.
Curvature and drop off at edges can be distracting.
My choice in many cases, not all, is a normal (50mm).
I take multiple, panned images, then stitch them together.
This image is an example... it is seven (7) images, panned left to right, hand held
