under expose and overdevelop for greater contrast and sharpness. over expose and under develop to control contrast.....also when shooting in the tropics a long time ago i found the temperature of your developer was most important. At 75 degs .trix pan professional only needed 4 mins with constant agitation.........you picked the best developers .good old d 76 and dextol......to increasse contrast when copying and old photo ,i used to develope my neg in the dektol under a red light using orthocramatic film strips in the enlarger. if you really want to boost your contrast use asa 50 or 100 film. i once developed an assignment on the way home from cammoweal on the floor of the car i was travelling in . trustring in the good old d76 i new the trip would take an hour and i had to have negs by the time i got back to the paper. so i put a teaspoon of d76 in the tank and filled it with water and drove all the way home giving the tank a twirl and at the same time dodging cattle and kangaroos.....but i made the dead line and the story went to bed on time. diluting the developer allowed the negs to develope very slowly.....and yes i carried a black bag with me always.

use a wide angle if you wish. Just make sure it is positioned in the dead center of the painting and from top to bottom and left to right and there will be no problem. there is no distortion in a wide angle lens. Its the way the operator uses it badly. Also i have a set up i use for copying anything at all .....first of all i place glass over the subject to keep it flat (you cant do that with oil painting because some have rough paint on them)

and then i set up my lights about a foot above each corner. One on each corner facing straight across the corner towards the opposite light allowing only one unit of light to fall on the painting. That way you have one unit from each light on the painting making overall even lighting.
the painting receives one unit evenly all over and cancels out all reflections.
id draw you an illustration but i cant draw well enough.....this system works for anything you wish to copy.....just be aware of extra light from anywhere. A dark room is best. In the absence of lights i just fire my flash across from each corner in the dark using bulb and making sure to hold the flash horizontal

The truth.........for more than 40 years i worked as a press photographer and wanted to become famous ..and did so in my small pond.....but time and again i saw untrained, uninterested in photography people shot to fame by a friend. One case in particular. My neighbour .
An avid gardner was asked by his neighbour, who was a publisher, if he would buy a camera and take some pictures of certain flowers.....he replied ,"but i know nothing about taking photos." being retired and loving flowers he finally accepted . Seven publications later after they were installed in school libraries all over the country......he is now know as an expert photographer and and is rolling in wealth, has his own photo gallery displays and still claims to know nothing about p[hotography and is forever asking my advise ....but not offering any of the glory ,or the work. I was published in Time magazine and worked for a few agencies while working as a photojournalist for various daily newspapers but never earned more than my weekly wage from them......im now retired and approaching 80
and completely pissed off.

i have read the manual for my Nikon 5100 and still cant figure out the manual control. when i choose auto and point to a grey card i get an exposure reading .(say 125 @5.6)_ i feel it is not enough depth of sharpness for what i want , so i switch to manual and take a reading and get a completely different set of exposures...if i accept the new readings and just shoot, the pix comes out black or at least underexposed. If i try to get a new reading with manual setting nothing changes.
can anyone explain to me in a way i can understand how manual is supposed to work when you want to take a light reading.
thankyou

hi david pine,
i have been one of those as you have stated who are allowed to enter into danger zones while everyone else is safely tucked away in bomb shelters....all it took was a small press pass or sticker....many times i have been allowed to take off in small aircraft while the airport is closed to all traffic, just to get the shot. I have crashed in a helicopter and and landed a small cesna with one wheel missing on top of a mountains roughly built runway to service an outback mine and geta photo of the plane that crashed before i got there while journalist just sat at thier tables drinking coffee and getting the story over the phone..we were always thought to be expendable.
but believe it or not .....i loved the job and miss it dearly

hi mmc , happy new thing to you too.
no i'm not kidding, i'm old school trying to climb my way into the future and having trouble with digital cameras. My experience is with making a living( In the past of course . retired now and jsut an occasional job, with the old gear.) I have seen some beautiful work with rich blacks and clever skin tones in the mid range and highlights that have both detail and washed out look but overall beautiful b&w portraits.......i can manage it in the old darkroom but am at a loss with digital......any help would be wonderful.....in my days gone buy professionals kept their secrets and helped no one but that seems to have changed also.
