I have not yet printed the photo, as I will be uploading photos to my website to allow others to print. Is printing the photo the only way I can determine how to best process for printing? I photographed the event this morning and there are two more days of the event this weekend.

I am also concerned that if I crop the photos at all (my Fuji XT-1 is a 16 megapixel crop sensor), that with any grain plus the pixel reduction from cropping - might produce a bad 8x10 result.

I have been asked to photograph a dog agility competition in a covered arena. There is some outside light on all four sides, but I am finding a need to shoot at ISO 5000-6000. I shoot Fuji mirrorless XT-1, which reportedly is supposted to handle high ISOs well.

This photo was shot at 1/1000 f4.5 ISO5000 with a 50-140mm lens at 140mm focal length. (I am shooting in continuous high, burst mode with a center zone focus - but I don't think this relates to my issue.)As you can see, there is quite a bit of grain. There is a default sharpening of 25 on all of my photos upon import to LR. This normally presents no problem. I do want to add some other LR edits, such as bringing up shadows and adding some contrast, but this will add more grain to the image. This would be no problem if the image was only to be viewed on screen, but people are going to want 5 x 7 and 8 x 10 prints.

I am wondering how I can improve sharpness and reduce grain in photos shot in this setting, allowing a good 5x7 or 8x10 print.

Betsy - I had a Nikon Coolpix P500 (bridge camera) a year ago. I liked its size, weight, viewfinder, and articulated LCD screen. But its lack of interchangeable lens, no camera RAW, and no cable release led me to pursue a camera with those features. I bought a Fuji X-T1 and am extremely happy with it. The thing I love the most (after the great size and weight) is the ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed are all on dials on the top... so easy to get used to while I am learning photography. Feel free to look at my amateur photos, most of which were taken early on (I bought my Fuji last March when the X-T1 was first on the market.)

This year we have had to replace the AC/furance, dish washer, washer and dryer, and two weeks ago the stove went out. My wife insisted that we must have a new microwave above the range. Her reason was she wanted the colors to match. I got mad and told her if it worked why should replace it just because you don't like a black working microwave above a white stove. I woke up the next morning thinking she has never prevented me from getting anything I wanted in our (14 days away) 44 years of marriage. So I told her it was fine with me. So she told me to get the camera I wanted, I am just trying to get a good buy. Thanks again - Greg
This year we have had to replace the AC/furance, ... (show quote)

You have replaced all of the appliances. Time to take some good pics of them and of the delicious meals produced by that new white stove. May I recommend a Fuji X-T1? GREAT JPEGS if you don't want to process. I don't have anything larger than the kit 18-55 mm lens so-far, but I'm having a blast. I have shoulder problems, so the smaller, lighter camera (and the lighter tripod) are nice. Don't get me wrong - I am a woman who REALLY likes to cook, so the choice between stove and camera is difficult. But I'm loving my new Fuji (my 27 year old stove is on its last leg).

If I save in RAW + JPEG, will I be able to see both files in LR, side by side so I can edit the RAW if I don't like the JPEG?

I am a DSLR newbie trying to also learn Lightroom 5 for organizing my photos and post processing. My Fuji X-T1 has film simulation settings in camera, but it appears that they have no effect in my RAW file output. (maybe they take effect if I am shooting in JPEG?) But Lightroom 5.4 has those film simulation presets, like Provia and Velvia. I have learned how to apply a Fuji preset from LR to all of my imported photos, but am not happy with how some of them look. What do you suggest? Find other presets to buy? Are there good free ones? Does anyone have any good sources? Or should I just tweak each photo individually? (ugh!)
