I think the rain adds to the intensity of the composition. Great capture.
Unless, I'm traveling I prefer my shoulder bag over the backpack because items are easily accessible. When I want to carry the least amount of items for a quick trip to the lake or park I prefer a vest because I can move around easier without the added weight of the extra equipment.

Very nice shots. I especially like the sparkle (catchlight) in the cardinal's eye & the entire composition with the nice background blur.
Come in closer and try to get the eyes(or face) in better focus.
