Sounds like what you have is a peanut slave inserted where the cord should go if you had one .Your sb900 should be able to trigger the lights if you bounce it off the ceiling.If that does not work take the slave unit out and turn it around in the plug(this will switch the poles)
I think somewhere near center court and a low angle will suffice
It depends on what you would like to be seen in background
Get an ambient light reading if you meter for background and light your subject as you normally do and control your background intensity with shutter speed,iso,or light it with your alien B and a tripod would be helpful
Canon Pixma pro 100 ,it's pretty large but you will love the prints
