I was able to capture this Black-Crowned Night Heron sitting on her nest with three bluish looking eggs. The quality isn't great. I took the photo with a cell phone attached to a spotting scope while I was out at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve in California.

A photo I took while at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve in California of a mother Black Crowned Night Heron and her chicks. I spotted four nest with nesting Black Crowned Night Herons. The eggs are a pale pastel blue color. Beautiful Bird.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate your response. A Dark Morphed Adult Harlan's Hawk.

Congratulations...you have an unusual color phase of a Red-tailed Hawk, namely, a Harlan's Hawk. They are not common and are mostly in the west. Your nicely captured example most likely is migrating south and appears to be a "dark morph adult". Thanks for sharing!

We were in Central Oregon and saw quite a few Bald Eagles. One of the eagles looked like either a Golden Eagle or a Juvenile Bald Eagle. Can anyone help me identify this beautiful bird. Thank you.

[Check out Eagle Optics. They have great prices and excellent customer service.

quote=jeep_daddy]I just upgraded my binoculars to a much larger heavier pair and want to invest in a good strap. My old binocs had a good Optec strap that went around my neck but they were swinging around a lot and banged up against things often leaving the outsides of them looking less than new. I don't want the new binocs swinging around my neck so I was thinking about a harness. But my biggest concern is that my camera strap, a Black Rapid, will cause interference with the binocular harness strap or vise verse.

Any advise on which harness works well with binocs and if they will cause some interference with a Black Rapid sling strap?

Old binoculars Canon 10x30, new binoculars Canon 10x42 both with IS.[/quote]

Amazing photos. Quite incredible that we have visited every planet in our solar system including the dwarf planet Pluto.

If you are going as far south as Santa Cruz, drive down to Point Lobos State Reserve just south of Carmel near Monterey. Well worth the drive. Point Lobos has been said to be the most spectacular meeting of land & sea. You won't be sorry. I have been a docent there for the past five years and it is my favorite place to go. Excellent photo opportunities.

I've had really good advice re. Smoky Mountains, now I'd like some advice on California. We pick up a little Escape campervan from 247 Beach St. Fisherman's Wharf. We want to head to Santa Cruz for the first night of our two week trip. This is daunting for us coming from Australia, though we have driven around South West USA 3 years ago. (My husband drives, not me...no way, I'm the navigator.) I'm thinking if we drive out of Beach St. to Bay St., to Marina Bvd., to Mason St., to Lincoln Bvd. Onto Geary St., then to Ocean Beach and follow coast. That way we don't have to take any left turns lol.. Would this be an easy enough drive? We'll be picking up the van at lunchtime on a Thursday.
I keep reading that the coast road down past Pacifica is hair-raising. How hair-raising? We'd like to go that way to see the coastline and especially Mavericks (famous surf break). Any ideas on good reasonably priced campgrounds near Santa Cruz? I'd appreciate any tips. Jude.

Very nice. I will try those settings with my SX50 and try to get a decent Moon shot.

Just thought I'd share this moon shot I took last night from my back porch.
Taken with my Canon SX 50 HS. Manual focus. Maximum optical zoom.
I wonder what I would have gotten with digital zoom.

Although not the best, I wish I had used this camera for the Supermoon/Eclipse.

I cannot get a clear shot of the moon. It was a full moon the other night and I could not get the camera to focus or get the exposure correct. Any suggestions. Thanks.

These made me smile and reminded me of the time when I found five baby possums trying to steal dog food. All five were standing in the bowl, which made it impossible to get to the food beneath them :-D
