A photographically challenged friend is asking me to purchase a good point and shoot for them and try and get them the most bang for the buck.
They don't want a DSLR as it seems to complicated for them.
SLR cameras is all I have and use Nikons, Olympus and an old Pentax film camera.
I am totally unfamiliar with desirable features on today's point and shoot cameras.
Can anyone offer suggestions as to brands and models that might make my friend happy in around the $200 - $300 price range.

Thanks ever so much in advance.

Personally, I've always favored Panasonic Lumix P&S cameras, although I've also had a couple Sony models and a Canon. Make sure the Lumix model you buy has a Leica lens for superior quality glass.

You also want to buy a P&S with rechargeable battery and a charger included. Some still use disposable batteries and that can be expensive over the long haul.

Well, another thing I like about the z980; it uses NIMH AA's (three sets on hand), but can use alkalines in a pinch.

Well, here's my 2cents worth again; the Kodak Z980 with 12mp, 24x optical zoom, full range of program and manual controls including RAW, hot shoe, included accessory grip for vertical including shutter button. It is as close as you can get to a DSLR without being able to take the lens off. Check it out at Steve's Digicams Reviews.

A few posts ago someone mentioned disabling the red-eye pre flash. If the slave flashes are triggered by the camera flash wouldn't the red-eye flash pose a problem, it being the first flash to fire?

That was my point; you should be able to disable the red-eye flash, leaving only the main flash to trigger the slaves, which would be instantaneous.

Champing, cute I had never heard that before I had to look it up. You've probably by now realized that you take on the ISO is reversed. I don't doubt it was happening we just need to figure out why. Were you shooting in manual mode? How are you triggering the flash? I'm not familiar with the 5100 but I didn't think it has a plug for external flash. You have to be careful if you're using a slave. The camera's preflash will trigger your strobes prematurely. if you were shooting in some kind of auto mode, Lowering your ISO may have extended your shutter speed, and those overexposed photos were the only ones actually taking full advantage of the strobe's output. If your strobes have modeling lights the higher ISO photos may have been made using either those or the overhead lights in the room.

On my z980 you can disable the pre-flash; I would assume the high dollar dslr's would have the same capability (the main reason I got the 980 instead of the 981 or 990 is that the 980 has a hot shoe; my zx7590 has a sync cord jack)

I'm using a Nikon P100.

I get "blue rectangles" in some of the shooting modes. Sometime there are 2 and other times there a 7 or 8. I've read the manual, and just can't understand what the rectangles are, or what info they are giving me.

Can someone please explain what these rectangles do???

Newbie looking for help!!!

It could also be your metering; scroll down in your menu to your metering and see if you can set it to single zone or spot.

Well, to answer some of the objections; first, there isn't any wallpaper anywhere else, so it could be just on the wall he is facing; 2nd, yes you can see fingeprints in the reflection, and third, even withe 4x blowup on my laptop you can see something on the back of the books. As for how it was done, not a clue, I hope we get the answer soon!

I've been following this forum for a few weeks, but just registered to post today. Years ago ('74-'94?) I had a film SLR and saw myself as a 'photographer'. Lost the camera, quit taking photos. A few years ago my wife gave me a basic Nikon P&S, which I used to take some good photos (mostly snapshots of the grandkids) but now I'm ready for a little more versatility & quality. I don't really want a full DSLR (more size, weight & cost than I want to bother with) but something more than a pocket camera -- so I've been looking at "in betweens" in the $300-600 range. One that was recommended by a relative in the Lumix series by Panasonic... My wife knew this so ordered me a Lumix DMC-GF3K for Christmas.

But I've done some more research (including this forum) since then and thinking maybe a "super zoom" camera has more of what I want. Something like the Canon SX40 HS... Don't necessarily need super zoom, but the Canon has other features.

Questions: Which has better image quality? How much will I miss the optical viewfinder if I keep the Lumix? And how limiting will the 14-42mm lens (that comes with the Lumix) be? I mostly take photos of my grandsons, and travel/nature; will probably start taking flowers, waterfalls, etc again. Some sports (oldest grandson plays football, but I usually leave those shots to the photogeeks with very long telephoto -- my Nikon Coolpix was no good for that). If I have to buy a long lens for the Lumix, the price advantage gets flipped real quickly... I'm not going to do a ton of post-shoot editing (don't have time, still work 5-6 days/wk) but want to compose & shoot good quality stills (& short video clips) I can be proud of. Ideas?

You previously use a film SLR and you used the view finder. With most PSs you don't have a view finder. Therefore in bright light, if you use just the LCD screen, you'll have difficulty in "seeing" what your shooting at.
I would suggest the Nikon P7100 or the Canon G12, both have view finders. I would suggest you review them and others that do have a view finder.

Good luck and let us know what you decide!

Odd; I have three Kodaks that are considered point-and-shoot; c360, zx7590, and z980 and they all have viewfinders. My z980 has 24x optical, 12mp, a fiull range of program and manual settings including RAW, white balance, and a host of others, and I have a hard time viewing it as a P&S. But that's for another post.

When you post here it has a check box next to it... SAVE ORIGINAL... If your pic is in size 1024 x 768 pixels, and you have that checked, thats what someone can download... I reduce the image size to something manageable and "screen friendly" of all photos I post... That way folks don't have to scroll to see the entire image... Watermarking is a tool in Photo Shop or other graphic image programs that lets you add a "ghost image" or text right across the pic. It stops someone from just copying the pic without somehow editing out your watermark...

OK, I'll give it a try. I downloaded Picasa shortly after I ran across this forum; do you know if it has the watermark thing? I hope to start posting a few sometime this week, but I doubt that any of my pics are 'steal worthy'!

First, I've got to find the disc it's on (along with some others I'd like to post), and then find where the instructions are for posting. Also, I need to find out if there's something I should do to protect my 'intellectual property' (any suggestions would be appreciated). (it's too late to protect my intellect, it's long gone!)

Well, here's where my ignorance shines through; what's a 'multi-meg' picture, and how do I watermark them?

Photographically, I guess I'm a dinosaur, not to mention my real age. I don't use a tripod very often, but I have a Husky Quickset, and a StarD Professional, and I've never seen a reason to have anything else. I cannot conceive of anything they wouldn't hold.
