What happened to the page where you upload the photos and at the end of the week, you get to vote on the photos, all in ONE place? I know changes were made to this site and since then I havent been able to find that page or view for the weekly contest.

Do we still have that view? It was just easier to see all the pics in one place.

So I shot a birthday celebration this weekend. I was fine with the entire party, was able to select the settings and modify them as needed.

However, I cant take the pictures , even with the flash on, when the lights were turned off. or when people were dancing. I tried the Shutter mode, and it said the subject is too dark and it basically took a DARK pic when it can, exhibit 1. I tried M mode and P mode, and let the ISO be Auto and set the A and S.

On the other hand I could take blurry pictures when people were moving. exhibit 2. Again, working the ISO be Auto and setting Shutter speed.

I do use a overhead flash, as opposed to the camera flash, and it could be a setting on that. I have seen accurately focused pictures taken on the dance floor and I would like to get there.

Also, how do I practice on that? any ideas? I wanna make a faster moving object and just practice on the settings. In light works better than the dark.

Help is appreciated on this wonderful group.

So Dark, due to reduced shutter speed

Greater shutter speed in P or M mode

Yes, exactly. The dress rehearsal is going to be prior to the event with four (direct family) members and I assume the rabbi. Thats when I will be able to take pictures. But not at the real event.
And the reception is over the weekend after the ceremony.

Some Bar Mitzvahs are as elaborate as fancy weddings with many activities--dinners, brunches etc. Others are very simple. So, good advice would be to talk to the mother and find out exactly what is planned and what she expects. If you cannot shoot in the sancturary the day of the event, there will be practices before hand and you will be able to shoot then.

THANK YOU! hdg.
Out of all the replies, yours is the only relevant one!
Seems like other people are answering whether as a non-jew I should be allowed to photograph a Bar Mitzvah! ha.

I was just in that boat a few months ago! In their case, the photographer was allowed in the room for 30 minutes before the service to "recreate" some of the important scenes. Here are the shots my client told me she needed. The boy on the alter/podium, the boy being handed the Torah by the Rabbi, The boy on the alter with varying family members, a close-up of the Torah, the boy holding this pointer on his portion of the Torah, the boy getting his prayer shawl put on. The boy with his shawl and his father with his shawl (in this case the mother didn't have a shawl, but some of the women did so I'd ask about mom). That's about all we had time for and then we went into the entry and got more photos with family members. Then the party was in the evening and was like any other party, really. The most important part was getting all the "best friends" photos. Good luck. It'll be fun.

Thanks for the replies and a little off-the-ramp venting from some! :)
I guess I should mention that the Synagogue does not allow photography during the ceremony so it will just be the family present and I was asked to take photos at the dress rehearsal. I guess I should have placed that info in the initial post.
And as for never shooting the BM, I think I am game for it - there is always a first time for everything and if I never do it, I will never step out of my Wedding experience.
I will look for Jeff Cable, I like his other videos...
Having said that, I asked what are the trends and ceremonies to look for on the day, I never did get that answer! :)

Greetings,

So I have a contract to shoot a Bar Mitzvah for a boy BUT.... I have never shot or even attended one. I dont know the lingo and the events or courtesies that happen. Yes, I can research and read up on it but anyone of you pros or religious people can give me a brief on the sequence of events and what would be expected of me to shoot? I want to satisfy my client and capture whats important and memorable...so looking for some help on the sequence of events.

Hello,

I don't know how many people here do this but before I had a kid (he is 2 now) I used to create yearly calendars out of my pictures for that year, and give them out as Christmas gifts. I have created one for our family, another one for the trip to London/Berlin, I did one for closeups/macro, and last year I did food/macro. So now I am kinda running out of ideas.

I could do one for the pictures of my kid but looking for other ideas, in case any of you do this yearly or have done in the past. I would like to keep a theme rather then all my best pictures of the year, that would be a mish-mash of different pictures.

Ideas?

So.... I am stepping into unknown territory. and a little (okay a lot) nervous...

I have done 3-4 weddings and got paid cash and now I have a little league that wants to do portraits for the little kids for the games. I will get paid for it and the parents will order prints. So I am just going to do little jobs here and there and charge money for it.

I am afraid to draw the line where I will be caught doing something illegal and being penalized. So at what point does it require to convert incoming income to a business and need registered or consider it a hobby? I am not acquiring or opening an office or hiring any people.

Also, how does that impact with lawsuits etc compared to an individual hobbyist? Can I do it as a hobby and get paid for it and declare it as extra income for IRS?

Anyway, Has anyone else done this here? and if I can bounce questions off of you till you hate me! :~)

Thanks,
SS

PS: Oh and I have looked at sba.gov, its a lot of resources and its confusing me.

No I don't sell my photography, though I do make some money with it on occasion, but I do quite a bit of printing, I just enjoy it and having prints to look at, or give to someone is just something I really enjoy. I do not print any smaller than 8.5 x 11, a lot of times bigger and I do print about 200 to 300 images a year on average. When I print at home, everything is better, compared to the ones I've gotten online: sharpness, color, overall appearance.

Do you have your monitor calibrated for colors? I have used printing places before and thats what my dilemma was! THey look great on the PC and then the colors come out all screwed up in the print! Does that sound like a calibration issue? Any recommendations on strategy or software to use?

Greetings,

Does anyone have a recommendation or a favorite for printing portraits? Like a printing press or a lab, that takes orders online and sends the print by mail. Have you used any place online that you like and trust? I am looking to print mostly 4x6 and 5x7 but all different sizes. Also, would be nice if they have different commodities, like mouse pad, coffee cup etc.

Thanks,
SS

Hi, I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this and how many of you have experience with this!

I want to be able to take clear, sharp focused pictures on the dance floor. I have been to 2 weddings and the images are all blurred when I have taken pictures on the dance floor. I want to know what your work flow is for low light moving objects..... I know its all about ISO, then f-stop and shutter speed but I dont get many opportunities to practice it.

I have a wedding to go to this weekend (as a guest) and I was thinking I could practice some.

Thanks,
SS

Hi,

so I signed up for the daily newsletter. I rec'd them for a few days and then it stopped. And I just now realized that I haven't been receiving the 'these are the new messages for the day' email... I checked around in spam.. NOTHING. I looked at it and they said contact the provider, and I contacted Hotmail, they said check with the ISP and they weren't much help.

I tried to sign up again, and it said I am already signed up. BUT I am still not getting the newsletter email. So its going somewhere but I am not getting it. How do I check?

I know this may not be the best place to post it, but where do I go from here? Has anyone else had that experience? how did you fix it or what was the problem?

Thanks,
SS

Howdy fellow neighbor! Odenton here.

I have seen July 4 fireworks pictures from the Harbor and they make a great stage! Do you shoot around locally?

Greetings,

Lately as I browsed the internet, I saw some examples of spreadsheets created by people to gauge what the cost of doing business should be given your income and expenses. I was wondering if anyone here has an excel spreadsheet that they utilize to come up with the daily wager, or if that topic has been discussed here before. I would like to know if anyone on here uses such a resource or can help out.

Thanks,
SS
