Any of you Hoggers have any luck using this lens handheld or say with a monopod? Seems like with the speed of this lens you should be able to compensate the lack of VR some at least with faster shutter speeds. I'm sure nothing would beat using a tripod but I'm curious just the same.

I have this lens and have routinely used it on my Nikon d750 and now on my Z 7II, with adapter. I only occasionally use it on a tripod and mostly use it handheld. I’m 65 and have had no issues with taking sharp photos with this lens. I would probably brace myself if shooting at a shutter speed of 1/40 or slower, but no problems at all when shooting faster than that. Hope this helps.

Professionally, I use a Nikon D300 body with a Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro lens. What is the downside to using a 105mm lens with this system?

I will jump in. I am also intrigued by the Nikon mirrorless cameras and am considering acquiring one. When I moved up from Nikon D300 to a D750, I was blown away by the difference in image quality, especially at higher ISO and low(er) light situations. Using one of “Trinity” f2.8 lenses, it is amazing how many excellent quality images I can get without using flash. One of my issues (actually my wife’s) with my present setup is the sound the mirror makes upon shutter release in quiet situations. My main question at this point is, “Is the image quality (noise level) that much better on these new cameras to justify the jump?”

I have the full frame, non-VR version of this lens and it is wonderful. For family and landscapes, it would work great. Bought mine from Nikon as a refurb, when it was offered for an additional discount. Still was pricey. For travel, the f/4, 24-120 VR Nikon lens (the latest version) would give a bit more versatility. I took mine to Europe last Spring and it did a great job.

I want to thank all the hoggers who took the time time to share their insights with me. Too often, a question is posted and we never get to find out how the original poster resolved his or her issue, so I wanted to follow up. I have a Bolt VS-560N flash as a backup have unhappy using it this past week. I also realized I have accessories that I purchased for the Nikon SB-910 that may not be compatible with non-Nikon brands (my Vello remote’s plug doesn’t fit in the Bolt flash, for example). So when Nikon had a 10% off refurbished flash sale last week and just happened to have a refurbished SB-910 available, I took advantage. The price was about equal to the best used ones available on KEH and B&H, so I think I will be happy with my choice. Thanks again and happy shooting!

BTW, the car rental company did not report my flash as found in my rental vehicle. Someone has a nice flash (but I did report it as lost to Lenstag, where it was registered).

Congratulations! I upgraded to the D750 from a D300 several years ago and it has been a great camera for me. I agree that the Busch book is an upgraded version of the manual but it does give context and examples that are more interesting than just reading the manual. It helped me a lot. Some here may disagree, but I found Scott Kelby’s “The Digital Photography Book” series to be helpful (and entertaining) when I first started using a dSLR. He teaches you how to use the camera to get the result you want, while gearing toward Nikon and Canon users with specific settings on your dSLR. You didn’t mention which len(s) you are using, but paired with fine lenses, you have a very capable tool in your hands. Now go out and enjoy!

If you really liked the 910, then I do not see a reason not to replace it with the same unit, unless you want to go with the 5000 series to go radio controlled! The 910 is an awesome flash!

Thanks, all. Seems like technology hasn’t really improved much upon what I had. Radio control would be nice, if I ever decide to up my flash techniques, and a little less weight and bulk would be nice too, but for now, hopefully my flash gets returned or I will simply replace it with a used one (KEH seemed to have an assortment available for fair prices).

Thanks, folks. I did contact the rental company and there was an “electronic item and case” reported found and tagged. Unfortunately, I can’t contact anyone at the airport office until Monday morning, so I’m not quite sure if I’m in luck or not. Have to admit that a bit of a GAS attack just may be in play here too, so in case I need a new flash, I am asking those in the know, how to best spend my money.

Stupidly, I left my Nikon SB-910 flash unit in a rental car and didn’t realize it until I returned the car and flew a thousand miles away. So my question for this wonderfully experienced group is: Which flash would you recommend I purchase for its replacement? I am not a pro, but shoot with a Nikon D750 body and the Nikon 24-120mm VR, Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 non-VR and the newest Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR lenses. I do not use multiple flash setups (yet). I am mostly a “Nikon” guy, but am open to other quality brands. I have been happy with the SB 910 and could replace it with a used one, but don’t know what I would be giving up by sticking with the “old” technology. What do you recommend?

Upgraded from the D300 to the D750 in 2016 and have had zero issues. Great camera, especially in low light. Much better than my previous body.

I currently am using the D810 and my wife is using my older backup D300. I would like to upgrade her camera to a newer full frame camera. Should I consider the purchase of D750 currently being offered at a significant reduced price or wait for a possible upgrade to the D750 since this camera is about 4 year old technology. D300 works fine so there is no urgency. Any thoughts.

Upgraded from the d300 to the d750 and I haven’t regretted it for a second. Sooo much better in low light situations.

LensTag works for me. As long as you have access to the internet, you have a “verified” list of the gear you have listed in the app. Not sure how they “verify” your gear, but it takes a few days before it shows up as verified.

I thought I would include a shot with the 20mm1.8. Using a Df and "in camera" HD along with a sturdy tri-pod, I snapped this shot earlier this spring!

Wow, again! If this image came out of your Df without any additional distortion corrections done in post, then this is EXACTLY what I’m looking for. Thank you so much!
