So if the hood gets in the way of your shoot you remove it.. That does not take away from the hood lens's properties of decreasing flares and protecting your lens.. That was the point I was trying to make.

Can we all agree that a lens hood has by nature an inherited secondary function (according to the laws of murphy) to protect the lens with an occasional bump. If it can get bumped it will. There are many things in life that serve more than one purpose other than their main purpose. Example: An umbrella protects you from getting wet and can also protect you from getting sun burnt. It can also be used as a cane, walking stick and a weapon. So lets not get all flared up about the lens hood not made to protect your lens. :-)

You will gain from LR if you shoot lots of pictures for customers and have to edit large catalogs of photos. LR room strengths lies in the capability of organizing and processing a high volume of photos. If you are only occasionally edited one or two photos here and there then you don't need LR stick with CS6 or PSE 11.

Here is one with DOF added.. The original is a very poor copy.. Otherwise the edges would have come out better.

I think 8 is enough RAM memory.. I would be more concern on the Hard Drive space.. I have a Quad Core running a Solid State Drive as my C drive and a 2 TB drive my D: drive (Spinning Drive) Photoshop and Light Room run wicked fast on it. With plenty of room backup. I would also buy two removal hard drives for storage space.

Can anyone PLEASE tell me how I can edit Raw photos in Picasa 3... Do I do it just as I do it with jpeg? Thanks for any help you can give me... Tony

I don't use Picassa so I may be off.

My understanding is that Picassa doesn't write back to RAW. It handles RAW files by reading and displaying them. If you save, export, e-mail, upload, order prints, etc. Picasa generates a JPEG from the RAW file. Since various camera manufacturers have their own flavors of RAW Picassa may not recognize your camera's RAW file, especially if your camera is new. It also may not display or convert the RAW file to a JPEG accurately.

Picassa isn't really a RAW processing program and it doesn't take advantage of the extra information in your RAW file. You should really use a RAW file editor. Normally a RAW file editor comes with your camera if it shoots RAW or can be downloaded from your camera mfg's web site.

As was noted above nothing writes to RAW files. You may Edit them and Save them in the editor, but the 'save' is a layer that can always be undone. A Save As is used to make JPGs, TIFFs, etc.

I use Photoshop C6 which comes with Camera Raw pluggin. When editing raw files all the changes are saved to a separate XMP file extention. No changes are being performed on the original RAW file. In fact if you go back and delete your corresponding XMP file and open your raw file again it will open back up as originally taken. Also the XMP file is very small file size since it only contains settings and is useless if not kept together with the original RAW file. I'm pretty sure most of the other raw edited programs work similar to this.

so today I decided I would start shooting raw and when I put my SD card in my computer to view in windows live they wouldn't come up, so I understand why that is. So figured I had to go to my canon software and opened them in Zoom browser, which I've never used before but I could see my pictures could't do anything with them though. Went to picture style editor a EOS utility and still can't figure it out. Can anyone help me here before I just say screw it and go back to jpeg?? I also tried to see them in bridge no luck there either.

Thanks

Since you got the RAW opening figured out. I just wanted to point out that you will need a fast computer with lots of hard drive space if you are going to start working with RAW files otherwise you will be sitting around waiting a lot. I actually save my RAW files to a USB drive once I'm done editing and save a JPG from it.

I have bought a new computer and would like advise as to which to purchase for editing purposes, for photos and video, photoshop elements 11 or Lightroom 4. Thank you.

Go with CS6. This is what the majority is using and you can get lots of free tips, tutorials and pluggins for CS6 than any other photo editing program out there. I currently have LightRoom 4.3, PhotoElements 11, CS6, GIMP, and Photomatix 4.2.5 for HDR photos.

I have an Eye Fi Card x2 Pro 16 GB and it works great on my T3i.. Has many options. One that I really like is direct mode where I can upload the picture from my T3i up to my Android smart phone via WiFi. Also when you are at home the Eye Fi card can automatically uploads files to your desktop via your wireless router.

I see lots of comments on this site about Nikon troubles. I see few comments about Canon troubles. Perhaps, many buy Canon because they are a sturdier camera.

I agree, I'm new to Photgraphy and was debating on buying a Nikkon D5100 and when I saw all the negative stories about the D5100 camera going bad out of the blue made me think a bit. Seemes as if you google the Nikkon D5100 black image issue it is a manufacturing / quality control problem that I did not want to deal with 6 months to a year down the road. Yes, I bought a Canon instead.

I use an Eye-Fi x2 Pro 16 Gig Class 10 card. Now that is the way to go with memory cards if your camera is compatible with Eye-Fi.
