i love to make photo books and as a new gran i am always snapping away at my granddaughter. I find for the books try to get everyday activities in there. The things we do with our kids which we take for granted, having lunch, walking to school, homework, etc, the things that we miss so much when they have grown. put them in the book and your granddaughter will enjoy remembering her life with her dad as much as her dad will love the book. also dont crop everything out of the photo.

keep in the furniture in the background, the cups and plates of the table, the chocolate bar wrapper the television the car, the carpet all of these simple things that we see everyday but i 20 years time will evoke cries of.... OOOh do you remember that ornament? or car or whatever.

Dont just make it all about how your granddaughter looks, make it all about her life as it is right now and enjoy!

Yes it is designed by GoPro, it is a camera mount which fastens onto the dogs like a harness, it is not a dog harness which happens to have a camera mount attached. So it should be better for stability etc. but i think the best thing about it is that it is fun! :-)

I don't have a dog any more, but if I did, I'd get one in a minute. Provided it is designed by the GoPro people, it should work pretty well. There are harnesses that have worked on large birds. Of course, you need to edit your videos to get rid of lots of useless stuff...

i have one of these for the gopro, i have yet to test it but we regularly meet up with other basset hound owners and can have 30 plus hounds out for a walk all together. I thought mounting the gopro like this will give us a hounds eye view of their walk.

Whilst having a browse through UHH my computer told me it had detected malware on this site. It came to me in the guise of a java update. i had to click on the pop up to be able to close the browser but that initialised the malware. I have looked in the questions and answers segment hoping to find out who to report this to but i am unable to see anyone to anything to guide me. It keeps appearing when i look at this thread On the photographic discussion... What is the 'nazi' argument? ........ Windows defender says it is... softwarebundle:win32/SquareNet Alert level severe. I apologise if it my computer having a funny 5 minutes and nothing to do with this thread at all.

when I downloaded this photo the colours really came to life on my screen, The background for me is just right as i did not notice it at all. What kept me looking is that it reminds me of a tiffany diamond. The roes buds are cradling the rose like the settings on a diamond ring. I like how it is off centre but on download it appears to fill the whole space.

Thank you everyone, as soon as oldtigger mentioned shutter speed the penny dropped. I am feeling a bit of an idiot for not thinking about that but i am a very happy idiot as i have a flash unit which can be used off camera for less than £30. It is very basic but i am sure you will al agree that basic is about all i can handle. :-)

Hi
I have just bought a very cheap flash unit and it is only lighting up half of the photo. there are 2 bulbs in the unit and both seem to be firing. I can adjust the strength of the light but it makes on difference, i always get half the photo in shadow. Is this faulty or is it something i am doing? I have made sur my hands and fingers are no where near the flash unit so it is not my hands causing this. Any ideas gratefully received. Thank you

I use my kindle for reading books all the time, it now feels strange to hold a paper book. however like you i have a bsic kindle, not the colour all singing all dancing one and i have bought photography books for it. I find that on the basic kindle i cannot see the photographs diagrams etc properly, one reason being that they are black and white. So if the author is showing you something via photos then it is a waste of time. I can view them on my computer too which is better but if it is not in the kindle then i prefer a book.

Thank you Country's Mama, yes maybe a bigger crop off the top of her head might work, if she has lots of lovely curls i might disagree but she has even less hair than her grandfather!

My first thought when looking at this was "look at those eyes". I think you did them well. My feelings are if you are going to crop off the top of the head do it so it looks like you intended to do it. Maybe just a bit above her hair line. I really like the monochrome. You have done it without taking it to extremes and it giving her a soft warm baby look.

Thank you Minniev, like you i love dirty faces and take great pleasure in capturing her all covered in all sorts of dinner! I did try it with more contrast and a bit darker but it was too harsh i wanted to keep the softness and lightness on her face. I see what you mean about the bright blurs, i didnt notice them at first but i do look through rose tinted glasses at Penny

I am no portrait photographer, but I am a grandmother with a camera and from that perspective I'll say I like what you did with Baby Penny. Her eyes are gorgeous and grab attention immediately. I like the expression, which is slightly worried and not the bland expression many baby photos have. If the crumb bothers you, take it off. I tend to leave dirt and food on my grandson's faces, but I've helped others get rid of the same stuff: your preference. Many modern portraits cut off the tops of heads. It took me a while to get used to that, but now I do it fairly routinely, particularly with the grandson whose cowlicks look like Dagwood Bumstead.

You have a soft blurred appearance to the background. The only part that seems to steal any thunder from Baby Penny is the brightest row near her ear on the left side of the photo, I might tone down the brightness in those brightest blurs. Many folks here do not like sepia. I do. I might try out a bit more contrast and a more traditional black and white to see what would happen. I would bet you already did that and decided based on results. Anyway, I like Baby Penney and look forward to seeing what the REAL portrait photographers have to say...

Thank you Nightski, that serious look is the one she gives when she is trying to work out how she can grab the camera from me. She usually gives a big cheesy grin when she looks at me so it is nice to have a different expression. The lighting was horible on the colour version but it seems to work with this one

Nightski wrote:
I'd say R.G. is right on the money about the eyes. Love the look this baby is giving you, and I even love that the baby is so serious. It may be a personality thing that you have caught and that is precious. Love the lighting. Love the crop. Love the DOF. Yes .. you could have washed the face, but then instead of this wonderful expression, you may have tears and a baby looking away instead of right at you. I'd say this is a wonderful baby portrait.
