I could comment in a way that would belittle this person but they would not be worth my time! I'm a self-taught photographer and some people think some of my work is good ( nice feeling ) but I use my photography for enjoyment. As in any hobby/sport you always find people like this who somehow have all the gear and no idea aka "PRAT". I started out with a Minolta Z3 bridge camera 4mp and I still use it today as a walk around camera now and agaid if I dont want to go out with my camera kit. It's not what you got but how you use it, enjoy the camera, the best advice I was given was shoot,shoot & shoot some moer :) I attach a photo from holiday last year taking with a Sony W320 point and shoot. I would say to you as a self-taught photographer, use it on auto for a few weeks and shoot what you like be it landdscape your dog cat anythin that you take a shine to, you don't need to take a set amount. when you have the images on the pc all the data will be onn the file study that and look at the different settings for shots taken. It's ment to be fun a hobby.
