Thanks Sheryl the feedback is appreciated, confirms that someone is watching.

The real lesson there though, was the point that the original imagery was not sharp. Now whether that came from the download to UHH, as one I tried last night to do and which came out on UHH as a complete disaster; or if the original shot was not sharp in the first place, is anybody's guess, other than the OP.

Thanks anyway Sheryl,

rts2568

PS - Sorry Sheryl, are you talking about the deer or the mother, we have a parallel running link here.
Whichever I suppose, it doesn't really matter as neither could be finished off because of the underlying problems.

I'm talking about the mother one. I agree with you about the sharpness and clarity of the original. Its an old pic. I should have been more complete with my opinion. Yours gave the photo an almost "painted" appearance. With all the damage that was done, to me, came out looking the best with what was left of the photo to work with. If I was to restore it I would have done the same as you but done it all over. Make it more uniform. It had a more "intended" look about it. Like brush strokes not blended completely because the artist was going for that certain look.

To Sherylopneal
Fron rts2568

Thanks for clearing that up Sheryl. After sending my question to you I realised there are three examples in this thread - getting very complicated.
You are right though, I think mine is best also but then, I would, wouldn't I? Only you and me though, so we seem to be a minority - never mind eh?

Ok, mine is/was un unfinished by far but at the time I felt the best advice that could've been given was to help Harvie through to the learning of his own version of Photoshop, however, I'd not realised he only had an SE version of Photoshop which does limit the tools functions. Maybe he will go for the full version some time and benefit from learning to do his own retouching: or download something like GIMP to put him on the right path.

The Sepia too, needs to be dropped, especially now that we know the original was in B&W. Mother will have remembered this one in its original state too, so in B&W it should be, unless she requested otherwise; Mothers being what they are though, who'se to know.

This theme has brought out the best and the worst and also hopefully, will have been a learning experience for many; here's to the latter.

Hi again Sheryl,

Some people sware by Picasa, so all I can say is for you to practice, then practice some more, it is quite a useful application and one that easily gives you the first step up towards rewarding post processing.

Wish you luck with it.

You folks have to be kidding about Picasa, or what ever it's called. And you must be using PC's. Get yourself a Mac, get the cobwebs out of your wallet and you might find enough scratch to purchase some real software (Photoshop) and let you imagination show you what is possible. Picasa! How '70's . . .

To Wylie
From rts2568

Everyones got to start somewhere Wylie, and I know a local 'Professional Photographer' who still uses Picasa as his editing tool, but then he, unlike you perhaps, takes care with his technique and composition so probably doesn't need too much post retouching. He nodoubt, unlike you, knows how to use Picasa, his camera equipment and other accessories, so he knows what he wants from Picasa and gets it to do it, like others with the likes of that very versatile editing software called GIMP; and others you'll find when you big head comes back to Earth.

Besides, you need to come out of your spaceship of fantasy and take a history lesson, Picassa didn't exist in the 70s, neither did Photoshop! Oh, and you may have missed out while you were out there amongst the stars, that we unfortunate Earthlings didn't have digital cameras in the 70s, nothing of any practical use anyway that I know of.

Drop your arrogant, self interested attitude and learn some empathy for other starters and strugglers on UHH. Given time, perhaps a hundred years or so you might be able to come up with something constructive and helpful in a practical way to help others. you might like to suggest for instance that learning to use their camera equipment better first, is far better than spending on overpriced, editing software. Oh no, you can't, its already been mentioned. Sorry about that, perhaps you can come with something else maybe? If you can find a thinnking cap that fits of course.

So where are your examples of camparrison of why Picasa is so undesirable, compared to the version of photoshop that you use. Now that just might help UHHers think just how much better it would be for them to change the bank they use, to a more generous one and just pop over to the Adobe platform.

Oh, just another point you need to become aware of. photoshop works on Windows systems just as well as it does on the twice as pricey Apple machines. I do agree with you though, the Macs are a better machine in some ways but not at the difference they charge for a relatively similar set up. In that they are a bit like Adobe's greedy marketing strategies.

The abominable pricing of Photoshop by Adobe is a very acrid turn off for many - just compare the prices of current Photoshop products around the World and explain to those who would like to have and use Photoshop, why Americans can buy for half the price of Autralians - as just one example. And, this is not to mention their turn off policy of upgrading - talk about a bright flashing light pointing to the like of Picasa and other free downloadables, or the large and increasing cheaper products. If Adobe stopped being so damn greedy and incompetant in their marketing, I'd suggest that the increasing majority of freebie and other cheaper editing products' users would soon switch to Photoshop with Adobe not losing any income either.

WOW! Guess I touched a nerve! One of the most unfortunate aspects one realizes about folks who actually did get something out of the seventies is that they understand a bit of humorous wit. You know, the kind where they aren't actually judgmental and accusing. However there are some who hovered in corners, faked authority and knowledge and identified themselves using code names. It's easily understood why this site is limited in size rts2568. Seems you don't like change, politics, successful companies and intelligent software. And you might even be comfortable keeping your wallet tight inside your front pocket. So take a break for a minute, go back in your hovel and stew, get over it, and come out welcoming the new millenium. EVERY film company today uses Photoshop "heavily". Every photo person with any imagination (which is what we use to create wonderful captures) is familiar with Photoshop. So instead of blaming me for soiling your cornflakes, just give it a rest. As I understand it you do not own this site and you are not the authority for all photographic endeavors, actually. Why don't you give Photoshop a try. Once! And I'm betting you will be embarrassed at your post. As you should be. Keep in mind, All of your peers are watching. And shaking their collective heads.

I've had my Canon D60 for less than a year. I'm a newbie. Also new to this forum. I'm a fellow sarcastic smartass myself but perhaps wait to get to know us first. It just comes off kinda ##%hole like.

Anyways!! To each his own, live and let live, laugh, love, teach and learn.

There are a couple of issues with the moon.

For exposure if you can't use spot metering use "Sunny 16". That is, if you used f16 you use one over the ISO for shutter speed.

But camera movement is killer. So you want an exposure time of at most one over your lens mm; twice is better. You need to adjust the f-stop to achieve that. Or if you can spot meter use shutter priority at one over your lens mm or one over twice your lens mm.

Here is the day after full.

I took a pic of the "harvest moon" a few days ago and sent it in to the weather crew at a local station. They used it :) but I was already in bed and didn't see the e-mail about it until the morning :( The problem with full moons is that because the sun is shining so brightly on teh whole thing, it washes out any crater definition, but it was still cool to know that it appeared on TV.

Lighting was just the candles, with possibly a little spill light from the TV out to the left.

How would I go about bringing an bit of extra 'life' to teh reflection and colour in the glass.

I guess something to do with layers and masks etc, but no idea where to start

If you see this post early on as I try to post it, there will me no photo info..I am not typing a load of stuff only to have to do it again and again, and again..each time the upload fails.

Ok, so it has uploaded without 'Store original' ticked, so sorry but does not look like i can post to allow you to download...bloody crap internet connection..seems to time out even with a 1mb file up loading

Funny, the glass, orange, background and reflections were all I fooled with. The highlights are blown out. Can't add detail from what isn't there. I see some double edges, so movement in exposure. Get a tripod, spend $250 or more... (as that is what it takes to get a decent one). Bracket exposures from too dark, to too light.

Layer all of them- dark on the bottom.

Give each upper layer a mask. Hide all (fill mask with 100% black to hide all that layer) . Now using a soft brush set to white IN THE MASK, paint in what you want to see from that layer. Pick what is exposed correctly on each layer in turn and slowly build it up. If you go too far, switch brush to black and IN THE MASK, paint it back out.

You can set the layer to interact with the base using different blending settings... you'll have to play with that.

Or in the best CR2 you have of this scene, open in bridge and adjust the same image several times, and save each new adjusted version and layer those. ie adjust one to get the candle right, another the glass, and layer and paint like described above. This is what I did with you CR2.. however that had some limitations. In the end I painted in your candle by hand... not perfect, but with the right reference, I could make it hard to notice unless you pointed it out. But then I do it every day.
