Gramps, you are correct. Kids around here (at least back in my childhood days) used to say if she writes your name in her web you will die soon. Boy, did we have some imaginations or what. :)

Emagination? Yes I guess and those were the days when we played outside, after dinner, and went in when "the lights came on". Don't know about you, but my Mom would give me a quarter on Sat and I'd buy street car travel, a movie and pop corn in a downtown city theater---AND NO ON BOTHERED ME! It's not "your Daddy's " country any more!........Chuck

Went on a call to a house that had these beauties everywhere. Got the focus too soft on the first one.

Patrick, I believe these are the Spiders, when I was kid, we used to find in our gardens and they'd spun crude letters imbedded in their webs. In that era, during WWII they'd spin what looked to be a "W" and people would think it an omen.

Taken at an evening display during the Bournemouth Air Festival in August, it's not a technically good photograph, but I do think it paints the picture. After this shot, I decided it was time to start shooting in RAW and learning to process - we shall see!

So. what was wrong with this picture? What do you expect to gain from shooting Raw that you can't get from USING your eye, camera's science and technology and your ability? Shooting Raw does not take the place of reading, no studying your manual. But then who am I to preach?

Well hopefully the question has been answered by now. Everyone makes their own decision and that's cool. It comes down to what you like. Regardless of anyone else's opinion. RAW in my opinion gives you more tools to work with when and if needed. But that's my opinion. I like having the options RAW gives that jpeg doesn't. Think of it as developing film. If you take a jpeg it's like dropping your film off at Walmart and hoping for the best. If you use RAW your your own developer. It's a matter of how much time or effort one wants to put into processing the photo's if the need comes.

Then you never processed your own film? You never rolled cartridges from 100' bulk rolls? You never used trays, chemicals, an enlarger, tanks, safe light? You never worked past midnight to get a session completed and to your client? You never ordered supplies from Spiratone, Hollywood? You call a gimmick, RAW, the replacement for real photographic effort? When I put a roll of film in a developing tank, closed it up and set the timer I was never hoping for the best! I expected it!

This question comes up frequently so I saved these three images. They are all the same picture. I got out of the car and took a picture of a water fountain. You can see the original image over exposed, then the best I could do to the jpeg with Photoshop, then the final one is when I adjust the RAW file and saved it as a jpeg. You can see that RAW gives you much more ability to make adjustments in post processing. Most photo's I take are jpeg but if there's ever a question on exposure or settings or if the photos will be irreplacable then I always shoot also in RAW so that if I messed something up I'll have a better chance at fixing a mistake if I need to.

So how come you didn't check your screen, notice it was undesirable and change your CAMERA settings according? It's not as though the subject was going to run away from you. I'm still not convinced!

Chuck, I'd never debate whose photo it was. You are correct in that it was your shot. Nor are you at fault for using jpg format. It's an age old debate that will go on forever. The final image is the goal, regardless how we choose to arrive at it. The path is neither correct, nor incorrect. Each has it advantage or disadvantage, as seen from the point of the one taking the photo.

Yes, but the drum beat, instead of rim shot, expresses the attitude, "that was good"---but "I" could have done it better!

Gramps, you left out one particularly important step in your work flow.

Immediately after "I shot it". The next step is, I let the engineers, who wrote the software the camera uses to cobble together the pixels into a .jpg, do the post processing for me.
--Bob

Maybe so, but it was still my shot---not my picture! It's not, really my picture, until someone says, "Chuck, you did good!".

That's total B.S. The camera didn't tap me on the shoulder or ring a bell---I picked the subject---I framed it---I shot it---the finished product was my picture---I didn't need a contrivance gimmick to lick my egotistic face.

just a thought on " exhibit 1": it's a beautiful blossum, but I must admit that the bright reflections in the lower right quarter of the image are a bit distracting. I suggest that had you shot that in RAW the detail in those over-bright highlights would easily have been recovered with the first quick touch-up in your RAW converter and those clipped highlights would no longer detract from the effect of the othrwise well-exposed composition. it IS a lovely image!.

So what's yer point? You have an aversion to lower right hand corners? You see, that's just it, you PP addicts can't leave anything alone. I suppose you'd like to be able to order up the Grand Canyon monochrome so you can "improve" on it!

It depends on what I am shooting, and what there intended use will be. Just a family gathering, or snap shots, then it's JPG. If I'm doing something I want to get serious about, then RAW. Raw requires a follow up PP. I also find that if your camera is set up properly, then there JPG will work fine. I also find that with all the software out there. I have no problem working a JPG.

If in doubt, go out and shot a few hundred shot in RAW, and then come back and tell use your feeling. I don't see that much advantage in RAW and handling a file size thats almost twice the size of what a JPG would be. Just my two Cents.

I did and I don't. I guess I don't mind the toilet paper attached to my heel. See my exhibit #1 and tell me I needed raw:

Thanks for the response.
Is that a DC3 under your name? I once co-piloted a DC3 from New Hampshire to Newport News, VA (in the '70s)?

Not only a DC3 but a very special one. It was Eisenhower's campaign plane, "The Eisenhower Special" captained by my father in law, Capt. George C Boice. Dad went on to type Strats, Super Connies and ended up left seat Electra. Those were the days when we had fun in that business!
Incidentally who'd you fly for? North East,Allegheny,MacAir, Pilgrim,MoHawk, Piedmont?
And I'm sure you are aware of someone, on the Left Coast was installing turbo props on 3's---can you imagine 300 Knots in a 3--- Whoopee!
