imagemeister,
Currently I am using the mk2 camera with the 100/400 L series MK1 + 1.4 x converter and it will not AF at f8 unless I tape the pins. With the pins taped it works after a fasion, but not good enough for BIF.

Thanks again to all those who replied.

Thank you dugole, sharpshooter and LFingar for those interesting replies. It looks as if I will see an improvement which ever way I go. I am leaning towards a change of camera.

My main interest is bird photography on the ground and in flight.
I can afford to replace my old EOS 100/400 mm lens with the latest version or replace my EOS 5D mk2 camera with the mk3 but I can't afford to do both.
I should be grateful for advice including do nothing stay with the ones you already have. I would do this, but when I use the 1.4 times converter focusing leaves much to be desired.

Thank you.

Will someone please tell me why there is not one full frame camera that has an articulated screen. There is one on my Power Shot G12 and I find it so useful.

I do find your post interesting because you are so sure and I am not so sure! I have always used a mouse because it gives me the advantage of a 27 inch screen to work on. I have always imagined this to be better than a 5x7 inch pad. I am prepared to be convinced otherwise if the arguments are good so I look forward to reading replies. Thank you for your post.

If you are using a camera it is important to use a small aperture around f16 say. This will give more depth of field than larger apertures such as f4 and this in turn will compensate for any focusing errors and errors in aligning the camera parallel with the photograph. Small apertures will require longer exposures which together with the short distances involved make a tripod essential.

I agree with you on this. Setting to "A" when I already know I want a certain depth of field and just want to adjust the others. Setting to "P" when i want to control the others. Setting to "S" when I know what speed to capture it at and want to control the others and on and on. What is the difference???? Do you still not have to make some basic decision before you adjust any of the 3 controls that you do have??? Use them all. Heck, even the dreaded "Auto" with Auto ISO to completely guarantee the capture even if it is not perfect. You did get the shot!!! I shoot "M" as much as I can and "Auto" very seldom but I believe there is a place for all of them. Knowing and using the camera to the best of your ability is what it is really all about is it not, while still pushing the learning curve when you can???
I agree with you on this. Setting to "A"... (show quote)

Well said.

There should be some way of preventing the disaster suffered by this thread.

After choosing the ISO, what is the difference between shooting in manual and using program shift mode with exposure compensation?

It's a spec of dust in the eye of a ghost walking past an open window.

Sorry!
