Thanks to all the really helpful tips guys.

One other thing with the a7 or indeed the new a7 11, I want to buy a high qual lens, no-one has mentioned Zeiss lenses, anyone used them?

Thanks guys for your replies. The more I hear from you the better it makes my switch to Sony from Nikon.
Yes, I understand trading in to get the D800, but it's still very heavy and I do want to be able to carry a smaller cam around pretty much all the time without the weight.

Anyone been using the Sony A7 over the last few months, if so please give me your considered opinion as I'm thinking of buying. Currently using Nikon D700 with 24-70 2.8, but it is heavy.

I have had my Sony A77 for just under a year, I just LOVE it!!! I also have the A55...I want so badly to get the A99, but I want to see what Sony comes out with soon. I am looking for the old Minolta lens, but very hard to find. Also how much photography is your wife into? If this is new to her, then I would suggest classes from you local camera shop, so she doesn't get frustrated with the camera. And one more thing, the suggestion about the 16-50mm lens kit with the camera purchase....GO FOR IT!!!! The lens is awesome, I have it and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!!
After you give this awesome camera to your wide please have her private message me please. I would love to chat with her...TY

Thank you for that. My wife has had a Sony Alpha 700 since it came out, and she is a good photographer, so the A77 should not be a problem to her.

Having read on UHH lately of dust problems and oil on sensor problems I wonder if Nikon is slipping in their Research and Development Department, or are they just in too big a rush to get new gear on to a highly competitive market? Have the bean counters taken over and are now telling engineering and manufacturing how things have to be done?

Rubbish. Follow your own advice: keep it simple; life is easier that way...

What's the matter with you? No need to reply like that!

I have often used the Overlay tool but I have never understood how it actually works, it is so powerful. Does the tool add information or simply heighten the info already there? Can anyone enlighten me please?

Overlay is classified as a Blending Mode rather than a tool.
As you seem to have discovered, it is one of the more useful modes. The working of Blend Modes is rather complex, usually involving comparing the images/layers with black, or white, or neutral grey, then blending the results together, but you can get along quite nicely without delving too deeply. You will find the topic covered in any good book on Photoshop processing (try Martin Evening's - the only UK one that I would recommend) but the best way to learn is to go through the whole lot when you think blending may help and just look at the results. Some will look quite bizarre, but you will get to know what suits you in addition to Overlay (Soft Light may please you: also Screen and Lighten, whilst Luminosity is essential for using Curves to adjust tones without changing colour at the same time.

Grateful thanks, I will check out Martin Evening on PS.

Don't like seeing any camera shop go under, so it's a shame to see the name of Jessops disappear. The internet has ruined many shops and is not good when you have a problem and want to take it back or talk to someone about it. I'm talking mainly about having the ache of packing and postage etc.
