I've done quite a few time lapse videos with my D800 and an intervalometer. I then process them through Lightroom, Photoshop if necessary, and build the video in Premier Pro. You can see some of them on our company website www.tasinc.aero/videos. The one unloading and loading a 747 freighter is pretty cool, all done in two minutes. There cheaper ways to do it, but this works for me. I had the intervalometer set to take a picture every two seconds.

I agree with reading the "Understanding Exposure" book by Bryan Peterson but I would go a step further and look at www.PPSOP.com and the Understanding Exposure class taught by Bryan Peterson. I have taken about a dozen courses from PPSOP over the last 5 years and never been disappointed.

I agree about ppsop. I've taken about five of the classes now and have learned a lot. Taking one now on the Nikon flash and it has been very helpful.

Thank you! Now that I hear it, it makes sense. I had only thought of it as changing the focal point not the aperture. Appreciate it!

I have a Nikon 70-200 mm f/2.8 lens and I was using a Nikon 1.7x teleconverter. The lens has a minimum aperture of f/22. But with the teleconverter on there, I can dial all the way to f/40. I took a picture and it had 340 mm (which I understand) at f/40 (which I don't). Can anyone explain?

I too went out and shot the moon last night and was surprised at the results. This was shot on a D800 on a tripod with 1.7x teleconverter on a 70-200mm@340mm f/8 1/60s ISO 100. The craters on the right have good definition, but I was surprised how dark the moon came out of the camera. It took some pretty good PP to get it to this point. There was some high, thin cirrus, so not a completely clean shot.

It appears that you have to shoot it very dark and adjust in PP. Is that true?

There's no restriction on pictures. Anything you're taking pictures of, the other side already knows about. Snap away!

I am looking to get a gimbal head for my Gitzo tripod. Perhaps a Jobu or an Induro. When I look at the gimbal specs it says some fit a 1 and 2 tripod and others fit a 3 and 4 tripod. What do these numbers mean?

I did a search on the UHH site and could not find the meaning of these numbers.

Thanks for the help

With Gitzo, I think it refers to how much weight it will hold. Series 1 is about 15, series 2 is in the 20's, series 3 is in the 30 pound category, and so on.

I had to take all camera batteries out of carry on bag to check in bag at the counter on a flight from Hong Kong to Australia. Is this normal procedure in domestic flights in Nth America? Is there a policy on this up there?
The reason I was given when I ask was that it was a fire hazard as there was an incident involving smoking batteries.
It won't be fun when security tells you no batteries allowed on board and you have to surrender them or make another trip to the check in counter.

I had to take all camera batteries out of carry on... (show quote)

I travel a lot and always have the spare batteries in my carry on. If something happens to them (ie., overheat), it's better to be able to get to them. It sounds like someone was following the "rules" without understanding them and knowing that they really had them backwards. The TSA reg quoted earlier is the correct reference.

I didn't use the video at first on my D800, then tried it and saw how great it is. So now use it quite a bit. The video adds a whole new way to spend even more money on photography stuff. What a great feature! It's like a huge new sink hole.

I'm sitting in the cockpit of one of Cathay Pacific's (CX) new 747-400 ERF. I used to fly big aircraft with the Air Force. Now I have a company that services aircraft and customers like CX and that airplane at airports around the country. Jack

Does anyone have any reccomendation for which lighting kit to buy for studio

If you have an iPad, Scot Kelby has an app (and I think it was free or didn't cost much) called "Lighting Recipes" that has recommendations for studio lighting. He has a series of indoor and outdoor photoshoots and you can click on equipment recommendations. I found it to be extremely informative!

Has anyone else had a problem with the 10-pin remote terminal? I was trying to hook up a remote release today and the black connector inside the camera came loose. The only scary part is that I immediately called Nikon as I've only had it 4 months and they said "impact damage" is not covered by the warranty. Hope it was just the phone guy talking! Just wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar issue with that connector.

Just wondering how you carry your camera and large 400-800mm lens. Has anyone come up with an easy way? or a better way than over the shoulder.
I'm interested in this as I need to carry my equipment for about 1/4-1/2 mile on foot to reach my desired shooting location. I can't use a roller bag as it is uneven ground. I don't want to carry it over my shoulder as it is too uncomfortable and I might drop the camera and lens if I miss a step. I thought of a specialty back pack made for this but can't find one on the market.
Does anyone have a better idea???

I use a Tenba Discovery backpack that I got from B & H Photo. It has adjustable compartments and protection for the weather. I used it on a trip to Alaska and it worked very well.
