Yes rented a small boat and enjoyed the lake when I came across the Heron my only disappointment was when the bird took off I had my 80-400 lens on and did not have camera set with a high enough ISO so flight shots are very blurry where when I was on the Canyon lake I was using my 24 70 2.8 lens

Hi hedgehogs Spending some time here in the land of the sun. Found myself wandering around the Superstition Mountain area, and Canyon Lake. Here are a few pictures of a Heron that I came across

We are going to Jamaica in a few months.
My wife and I are trying to decide whether or not to take my D5000 or not.
We'll be at the beach....so I'm worried about the sand and salt.
I certainly don't want to miss any great shots, but I also don't want to be worrying about the camera all the time, either. There will be an in room safe to keep it in, if needed.
I'm thinking of getting a P&S instead so I won't be worrying and can just enjoy our first vacation in over 6 years.
My thoughts are that if I was going primarily to shoot pics, of course I'd take the camera.
But, I'll probably be spending alot of time on the beach with a drink!
Thanks in advance for helping with this decision.

If you are worried about your camera add it to your home or Apartment insurance because what good is it owning a camera if you go away with out it

Helicopters are a flippin GAS !!!
If you're lucky enough to find a retired CW-4 to fly it for you
you'll NOT soon forget the experience :)

A question, if I may. Did you have a pack of VC's shooting at you while leaning over that skid? That was the most fun of all.
Kept things exciting. And the rides were free too.

RMB...You've got two great lenses, money to go to Hawaii and more to rent a helicopter. Spend a little more to rent a second camera for this once in a lifetime photo op. You don't want to worry about switching lenses while you're flying around the volcano. Your 14-24 and your 70-200 (we are talking Nikon, aren't we?) will be all you'll need. The 70-200 is sharp enough that you'll be able to crop if needed. Be sure to think ahead about the conditions and what settings you'll use. Try to use a fairly fast speed but also an aperture about f8-f11 if possible.

Steve thank you for your comment I was not going to take my spare D300 with me trying to cut down on weight and just use my D3S This would have proved to be a total failure. It is almost impossible to swap lens in a doors off helicopter ride made even worse when the helicopter adds another person in the middle seat in the front of a Hughes 500 helicopter. So here are some of my shots using D300 with the 70/200 lens and the D3S with the 14/24 lens

D300 ISO 400 Shutter 1/500 sec. F7.1, 200MM

Nice shot. I've been thinking about the macro 105mm and the 85mm. I stand firmly on the fencing, not wavering either way yet. It will be nice when I finally fall on one side or the other. lol

The 105 gives you a bit of distance which in this instance was helpful they (sand crabs) are very skittish. I plan to get a 60mm soon as well.

Well I think the best policy is insurance. I am off to Hawaii next Saturday and recently purchased a Think-tank bag complete with locks. Problem all my gear weighs 38 pounds and 22 is maximum carry on weight for west jet. I am now packing a 2nd carry on bag to cut the weight down as I do not want to check gear even thought it is insured. Flying is such a pain with all the rules. Ok I have had my whine I feel better hopefully I return with all my gear.

Thank-you for all the suggestions. Steve R good idea was going to leave my d300 at home and just use the D3s. I weighed my camera bag and with all my lens and camera's it was 38 pounds and West Jet says 22 lbs is the maximum weight for carry ons. As it is all insured so more gear in suitcase with the tripod and less clothes LOL.

Hi Hogs Would appreciate any suggestions that you might have on shooting the Volcano from a helicopter. This is the Doors off helicopter so that will help I am sure wanted the evening flight but my time will be at 2:30 PM. I am wondering if I should use my 80-400 f4 to 5.6 or maybe my 70-200 will be fine as it is a 2.8. I am also going to have my 14-24 2.8 lens with me. This is the only time I will ever have to do this and as I have never taken photos from a helicopter need all the help I can find.
Thank you to any Hogs that respond to my Question.

I can't tell if you are looking for motion blur (while panning) or freeze-action. If you want more blur, try about 1/250 or 1/125. If you want to stop them, go to 1/2000. Personally, without some blur, they look like parked cars, to me.

Snowbear I agree with your point when panning In this instance I was much further down-track using my 0-200-2.8 zoomed out to 200mm. But you make a very good point that a little Blur stops the park car look. thank you for your input.

Hi hedgehogs I took these pictures last Weekend. As you can see there is still a bit of blur. In all the picture's speed of race cars at least 100 MPH . The next day I tried some more pictures at 800sec still not happy with the result. Open to any suggestions.
