We are going to Jamaica in a few months.
My wife and I are trying to decide whether or not to take my D5000 or not.
We'll be at the beach....so I'm worried about the sand and salt.
I certainly don't want to miss any great shots, but I also don't want to be worrying about the camera all the time, either. There will be an in room safe to keep it in, if needed.
I'm thinking of getting a P&S instead so I won't be worrying and can just enjoy our first vacation in over 6 years.
My thoughts are that if I was going primarily to shoot pics, of course I'd take the camera.
But, I'll probably be spending alot of time on the beach with a drink!
Thanks in advance for helping with this decision.

For memories and pretty good images I'd get a waterproof P&S and leave the DSLR at home so you can enjoy every minute on the beach.
The new Powershot D10 from Canon is a great buy and also has decent HD video. That would be my first choice.

Thanks, Festina!
The waterproof suggestion is good. I hadn't thought about that.

Here is what I'd do.

I'd bring my gear.

Then I'd separate the "fun" days with the "shooting" days.

I'd sit on the beach and pay attention to my wife and have rum drinks with little umbrellas in them...without a camera.

Then i'd take the next day and walk around with my wife, but with the understanding that we are trying to get some vacation/environmental shots.

That way the stress level goes way down.

Totally agree! I would just relax and not worry about my expensive camera being stolen or damaged.... and it WOULD be at the back of your mind the whole time! I love my little Canon P&S and leave it in my truck all the time for "wish I had my camera" shots.

#1 I would take it - you would forever be beating yourself up for not doing so.
#2 - common sense will tell you when & when not to pull it out - a good "new" care & cleaning kit is called for.
#3 buy that weather proof P&S - there are some darn good ones out now & you will always have it for the time the D5000 needs to stay in the bag

I lived on the beach near Cancun for 5 years - never got my SLR & kit messed up or my Digital bridge camera - also nevr knew of anyone else doing so. Yes - dive cameras with bad seals - but not our on land cameras.
Have a nice trip - Oh the weather proff P&S cameras make great snorkleing cameras too. Do not miss the fun - buy one - take both cameras.

I hope you are going Nov. thru April. Prime time there.

I say....forget bringing the D5000 and get a nice P&S but focus on your time on the wife and have a good time with her.

Question: Why would you buy a car and not drive for fear of a collision ?

Ok, folks....I appreciate all the feedback and suggestions.
The decision has been made...and not by me.
Wife: "Not just no....HELL No!"
Me: "ok"
Might not be the wisest decision as far as photography....but probably is to have a happy marriage and vacation :-D
I'll be looking for a waterproof P&S, I guess.

I went to my sisters house in Virginia beach and took my camera with me. I had no issues and a real good time.

I agree with this. I could never leave my good cam at home....I know I would be wishing I had it with me.

Personally I think I would get one of the new waterproof p&s cameras. You have to be careful. I went on a cruise there a couple of years ago and the cruise line was cautioning us to be very careful because of robberies taking place. Your big camera is not one I would want you to lose because somebody down there decided they wanted it.

I'm guessing you'll also shower naked so should you take clothes?
