Why waste money on books when you have it all on utube, you can even get a utube downloader, to take all tutorials off which help you most, as there forever changing on utube.
Try using a program called (define 2) it's a photoshop plug in that gets rid of noise in one click. you can have a free trial before you buy, well recommended.
For better results shoot in raw, as there is a drop down box in p/shop that helps with fringing.
When shooting in such daylight put a screw type polarizer filter on the lens, this way you wont get burnt out skies like in your photo's, you can pick cheaper versions up on ebay.
I have the sigma 120mm - 400mm this is a pretty good lens and quite cheap compared to the 150-500mm here is a web page to look for yourself.

Welcome paul
The macro one is very good
Looking at the photo's i think you have a creative side as you are, i like the macro shots, you just need to pump up the color a touch to make them stand out more.
I use the sigma 120mm to 400mm i'm quite impressed by it so far, has a good price mark as well.
If the pump was on its own then it would look good in sepia, my fav is the color one.
