noise and shutter speed?

I'm using this picture as an example. Tonight I wanted to get some photo's of the colors at sunset. But as you can see, it is terrible with noise. Forget the focus issues. My guess is that I had my shutter set at 1/4000 because this afternoon I was trying to get butterflies in flight and forgot to reset it. So anyway I'm wondering if the noise is due to the fast shutter? ISO was 100 and exposure was set to direct sun light.

1/4000th of a second and ISO 100? Please verify that. I'm not sure you could capture that image even with an f1.1 lens.
What camera are you using. I suspect that the ISO was very high, perhaps 1600, 3200, 6400, depending on the f-stop.
Just a guess.

ISO was set to Auto so maybe that was the problem?

Remember the Light triangle: ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed. Your ISO, being in AUTO chose the highest setting it could. Hence the noise (or grain as we used to refer to with film). There will be more opportunities.

The foreground is out of focus. Your ISO too high. Underexposed.
Use a tripod. Focus on the light poll. Set your ISO 100-400 Aperture to f/8 and let the shutter speed vary. Take a shot and then check your histogram.

What noise reducing filter did you use?

I've made the same mistake when rushing to get a picture, and forgot to change settings. So far, I've tried Topaz, and CS-5's noise reduction, and haven't been thrilled with either. I would gladly accept your tweak over some of the results on my mistakes. I always get rid of them, but for those "one off" shots, I'd like to have something that worked.

I made the adjustments in Lightroom 4.1. boosted saturation, clarity and vibrance. killed the noise with luminance.

Try using a program called (define 2) it's a photoshop plug in that gets rid of noise in one click. you can have a free trial before you buy, well recommended.

That would appear to explain the noise when using 1/4000 shutter speed. Mystery solved!
