I recommend to turn IS off, when using a tripod. Why take a chance?
I think any support is better than handholding for a prolonged time, and since the 100-400 is a fairly small lens it should do fine, unless you need to leave camera + lens on the tripod for a long time (step away and come back etc - I would keep a hand on the tripod at all times for security).
I knew it (even the cat never said a word)!
The Nikon is optically superior and the IS is rated 5-stops - that will make it just as fast (actually faster) than the Sig. Also, the Nikon has nice AF, the Sig does'nt.
Buy a smart charger! I use the Maha C801D and love it. It charges each batterie on an individual circuit (it is very important to have a charger treat batteries as induviduals). The 801D is also a multi-voltage power pack. You can plug it into any outlet around the world. I highly recommend it, it is a great charger (I mainly use eneloop as well).
You won't regret. After shooting the MII for about 4 years, I got the MIII a year ago and love it (MII is my back-up now). You will fall in love with the AF.
Looking at the picture, you must have one heck of a camera bag.
I still shoot a lot of Fuji Velvia (slides) and have them developed through B&H. Sometimes I have some pictures developed too. All my digital stuff, I print at home (Epson 3880 Pro).
I'm sorry, but I'm with JR1 here, spot metering off the rock would 've helped. (I guess the rock was your point of interest for taking this picture anyway, since you "framed" it that way).
Manual is best anyway, TTL would be useful only in certain- and few circumstances
I don't like all those small cameras either, all of mine are gripped, and still I would like 'em bigger. I think the smaller they get, the cheaper they are to produce.
I used to have the 50-500 and did not like it, got rid of it.
Thank you Douglass, I will do that next time. To answer the question: No I actually upgraded to a macro bellows (also Pentax), but I still use the 75mm and/or the 55mm (both Pentax and f/2.8. I guess now I have to take a pic of my set-up to show..... I will do that.
