1. Paper! Photo printing paper can be quite expensive, so I ask for this whenever I can.
2. Ink! See above.

I would second going with eBay, but watch the sellers feedback score and only go with the best. Also, it would be a bonus if they specialized in photography equipment. That combination would probably be reliable.

I would recommend eBay. I've sold hundreds of items and the results of getting the going value is very consistent. (I've actually made a hobby out of buying bargain cameras on Craig's List, then selling them at a profit on eBay).
If you're not familiar with eBay, I would suggest having someone who is list it for you as there are a lot of details to consider (shipping costs, proper description, etc.).
Best of luck!

I've gone from D70 to D80 to D90 and have always been a few years behind, in effect saving hundreds with each used purchase. Cameras plummet in value within a year of release, so I wait. The latest bells, whistles and new camera smell are rarely worth the extra $$...to me anyway.
The D90 is still a solid amazing camera that will keep me happy for a while longer. I might be buying a D600....in a few years. :)

Ambrose...

Sorry - Saying Gimp doesn't do 10% of what elements does is an exaggeration. Here is a comparison between Gimp and Elements 10 I think you'll find enlightening.

Thanks for the link. It is easy to see with such off base reviews how the world misunderstands.

It doesn't even address the Oranizer part of Elements...which Gimp doesn't have at all. It is a very useful (and as in this article often overlooked) feature of Photoshop Elements. It also mistates other things like Element's email link.

It also provided misinformation on RAW files. GIMP doesn't do RAW files. You need another program to get RAW files into GIMP. In that sense it compares to the Elements Editor...which also doesn't do RAW files. But Elments seamlessly incorporates Adobe Camera RAW to do the work on RAW files while going from the Organizer to the Editor. Also the Organizer handles RAW files seamlessly.

I think I'll stick by my assertion.

I have used Picassa for years and am very used to it. I feel I should update and delve deeper into the subject. I have trialled Elements, which I quite like, but my very savvy son-in-law tells me I should use GIMP as that is 'state of the art'. Can anyone give me advice on this. I do not have much money to spend

Hi all! So glad I came across this site. I've been looking for an active, no-nonsense forum like this for a while and look forward to participating. I'm a middle-aged enthusiast who has been stuck in "enthusiast" mode for about 3 decades :). I hope to eventually find my niche - maybe I'll finally figure that out here. All the best..

That's a loaded question.
Ask yourself a few more; Do you want to advance your photography skills? Do you want to take anything more than just family or vacation photos? If no to both, you're probably fine with the Coolpix you have left.
However, if you want to continue with an SLR and experiment more, You could upgrade to a used D80, D90 or a new D5100 to continue your journey.
An SLR will give you more quality tools and options to work with so you can start with an even better image before getting to post processing software.

Hi - just a thought. Most cameras have built in pre-processing which may be occurring in your Panasonic. Your Panasonic software may also have a default setting that is adjusting the image when you open it. Just a guess.
The 'natural' state for a RAW image is just that - raw and unprocessed, so Picaso is probably reading it right in a pre-processed mode.

Just a thought - I ran into many articles noting that the D90 was still just as good if not better that the D5100. I've been thrilled with my D90. It's built like a tank, has an internal motor (meaning it will still auto-focus with an older AF lens, unlike the 5100), and has a longer battery life. You could shave a few bucks off by finding a good used one (look for one with low shutter actuations).
I use this in combination with a Nikon 18-200 VR and a Nikon 1.8 50mm. These seem to cover almost anything I want to do.

Nice work! You seem like a prime candidate for a bigger zoom. Lots of opportunity there.

Your best bet is to keep it friendly. If you would rather they pay you, send them a note saying something like, "I see you're using my photo for your article. I am flattered. However, I normally require compensation for my work. Please send $xx.xx to my Paypal account or please be kind and remove the photo immediately.

On the other hand, if you're an amateur, this is great exposure. You may want to just leave things be, but thank them for using the photo in hopes they may come back to you - with wallet open - for their next photo need.
