I am headed to Europe this summer. I can only bring one lens and one body. I will bring my 28-300 lens to cover as broad a range as I can but I am struggling as to whether to bring my D610 (FX) or D500 (DX). That is, will I be happier preserving the wider angle (28mm) and use the full frame or, enhancing the telephoto end by using the crop factor body? I don't think any of the bells and whistles offered by the new D500 impact the decision for tourist photography. What would you choose?

I have taken my Canon 6D with the 24-105 f4L, which covered almost everything I wanted to shoot. Last trip to Scotland, also took my 16-35 f2.8L, probably my favorite lens.

Yeah, I know, it's Canon, not Nikon, but:
1. Took the 6d, its the lightest camera body I have
2. One body, same lens always attached, fits in a small daypack with room to spare, makes easy traveling, harder to steal.

Not sure what the best body for Europe is, but from my experience, the best bodies IN Europe are in Italy!!

I was wondering how long it would take for somebody to twist the intent of the title!! Dude, Ukraine has everything beat. And given Croatia, Spain, that's saying a lot!

I've had my eye on an Apple MacBook for quite some time, but wanted to wait and see what upgrades Apple would offer. I've looked at them in the Apple store and the 13" seems too small for these old eyes. I thought about getting the MacBook Air but it only comes with 8GB of RAM and you can only upgrade to 512GB Flash Storage and a dual core i7 processor (2.2 GHz w/Turbo Boost to 3.2GHz).

I pretty much decided on the the 15" Macbook Pro but I have a few questions about upgrades. The Basic model starts at $2399 and has a 2.6GHz processor with a 3.5 Turbo Boost (quad-core i7), 16GB Memory (2133 MHz), a Radeon Pro 450 with 2GB memory, and a 256GB SSD. The only upgrade I was considering was a bigger SSD.

I will use it for various software, mainly Microsoft Office (Word & Excel), Quicken, Cricut Design Space (for scrapbooking), and Adobe CC (Lightroom & Photoshop). I plan on keeping my pictures and other personal documents and back-ups on an external drive (preferably a NAS system).

My questions are: (1) Will 512 GB SSD be large enough and (2) Should I also upgrade the processor and the graphics card?
I've had my eye on an Apple MacBook for quite some... (show quote)

I think the processor is fine, I would upgrade the SSD. I have a 1TB SSD in my Mac Pro, and it is dangerously close to full, despite keeping photos, music, etc on an external drive. And I routinely clean all the dmg files from downloads up.

That's all it takes to remove a Canon lens? Press a button and it comes right off? Don't'cha have to give the lens a twist of some sort, too???

Yeah, it takes a quarter turn twist, and requires a little force, there is some friction (normally)

Does such a beast exist?
What do people do if on a multi-day outing, with no AC available?

I looked on Amazon, the Canon website, B&H. I found one item on B&H, https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1297985-REG/nitecore_ucn1_usb_travel_charger_for.html
Has anyone used one of these, or the Nikon equivalent?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Good Morning
My name is Ivy Taylor.
I am in the early stages of photography. I have taken classes at the art institute and a semester at a Community College. I have been using a Canon Rebel 3i. I wanted to upgrade to another camera. What canon camera would you suggest. I have had my camera for about 5 years but really started working in manual the last two years. Open for suggestions. I was thinking about the 70 or 80D. Thank you

Hi, Ivy,

First, what kinds of photography do you want to do? Did you take composition, or study different styles, at the art institute?

Second, what kinds of lenses do you already have?

If you have only EF-S lenses, they will only work on crop-sensor bodies. You don't mention going to a full-frame camera, like the 6D or 5Dmxxx series, but if you buy a new lens, most cases you should buy a lens compatible with both kinds of bodies.

Lenses, with proper care, will outlast several camera bodies. Case in point, I recently traded in four or five older lenses, and got 50% off the price of a 7D mark II, but only got around $200 for my old 7D body.

I hear the 80D is the best buy now in Canon's crop sensor line. The autofocus is really good, there are several other marked improvements.

Other people have remarked that your current camera is probably adequate unless you can define a need that it doesn't meet. I tend to agree, noting that a really good lens can make a world of difference for a particular style. OTOH, I wanted to do full-frame, ultra-wide-angle landscapes, make fairly large prints, so I ended up with a 5DIII (the 6D has found a new home with my wife). It's interesting that you want to upgrade after having done manual mode for a couple of years, what shortcomings did you notice?

Best of luck, and welcome. Step gingerly here to avoid the flames, there seem to be several adversarial relationships that bubble over from time to time.

Wes

You made the mistake that most people make. you didn't proof read what you wrote. But that's a new one. "CONON"? What's next CONAN? And a 24-79? couldn't you afford an 80? LOL

He washed it in hot water, and it shrank.

June 24 I have a wedding to attend near ASPEN, CO. Leaving the JUNE 17 and driving the entire trip. Stopping at 2 locations in MO. to visit cousins. After the wedding we will be driving to Seattle, WA. and then heading south and hugging the coast in WA and OR, eventually ending up on the Pacific Coast Highway in California. We will take that to LA and then head East to Las Vegas. Then we will head to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge and after that journey on home. We plan on being gone for about 4 weeks and stopping at SOME of the sites along the way on the west coast and other locations while heading East.

My question is, without stopping at ALL the wonderful sites along the way can we do it in 4 weeks?

I know there will be a lot of suggestions but how about some keys locations to visit?

Thanks.

I would recommend closing your eyes and driving through LA, then arriving in San Diego. Then wander up the north county, through the mountains via Julian, drop down into Palm Desert. Joshua Tree NP is worth an entire day; the higher elevations won't be nearly as hot. Then north from there to Barstow. Can I convince you to take a couple of days detour, go up to Lone Pine, take in the Alabama Hills (lots of movies had scenes shot there, westerns, Hulk, etc.). Depending on your tolerance for heat, I would avoid Death Valley. It will probably be ~120F by July, which is too bad, it's an incredible place. So go north to Bishop, then route 6 to 95, back south to Vegas. The east side of the Sierras is just spectacular.

Irene, no disrespect, but the OP is coming from the east coast, why would you recommend a zoo? There are zoos all over. Your state is so very beautiful, who would want to see prisoned animals? Would you suggest to a New Yorker to make sure to take a cab when visiting D.C.?

Respectfully disagree. My wife is native to San Diego, and we have to go to the zoo every visit. It is quite wonderful.

Join a good camera club where they judge photos taken by the members. This will give you an idea about the quality of your photos. Accept any and all criticism. If the club has members only judging, that is not good enough. Friends are not good judges of your work. Do not show photos that are of poor quality. The photos you posted here are not good quality.

Could I see some examples of your work? You actually had some good advice up until the last sentence.

I have a client couple who want me to photograph the consummation of their marriage. I've never done this before, but I'm sure there are a few of you Pros out there that have experience at this. Any tips on angles, lighting, location etc. I'm only going to get one shot at this.
Thanks!!

I'd go for the natural, low-light look, which means either my 85mm f/1.2, or, more likely, a 70-200 f2.8 zoom with high ISO -- but you probably want that B&W, "grainy" look, anyway. I'm not sure I'd want to get too close.

This will be a real test of your professionalism!

You're probably not supposed to do this, but I wanted to photograph the inside of a saloon in Bodie, CA (a restored ghost town), and couldn't go inside, so I put my lens hood right on the glass, and shaded the gaps with my hat. YMMV.
