Holy crap it is tough to get these jitterbugs in flight. Lucky for the sunny day to get the fast shutter. Nikon D700, Nikon 80-200mm, f/8, ISO 200, shutter speed 2000 and 3000.

Very well done. Both downloads show very sharp images. Will you share equipment and exposure details?

My thought is some sort of nymph. Do nymphs have wings?

T_Span, you can experiment with focus-stacking, if you want extreme DoF up-close.
Yeah that is so very sharp all the way through, well done. Stacking sure does get there but it does takes additional gear and software skills. Maybe at some point I will give it a try. For now it will be about getting the focus down and a good composition.

Nice shot. The lighting is right-on for defining all of the brick work. Hope the flag is just for the Memorial Day weekend, that is a handsome building to have covered all year.

The grasshoppers start the spring in the millions. Now they are a half an inch and under. They are a varied specie.

All sorts of birds will be feeding on them and not so many will get BIG. Kingbirds and eastern bluebirds sit on the power line to get a sighting and then drop down to score food. Turkeys will stroll through by the dozen and snack their way through the tall grass, they put a big dent in the population quickly.

Thank you for your responses and links to other information. I will open the aperture and see how things go. The flash is a Nikon 200 with some silly diffuser snout off the end of the lens (a work in progress). Is the lighting crappy? The glare, or reduction of, is actually miles ahead of the first attempt. Have the flash setting at zero compensation and had to bring exposure up in post.

What techniques do you use to extend your depth-of-field? Mostly I have been trying to get things captured with the lens set to 1:1 and a small aperture opening. Maybe it would be better to shoot 1:2 or 1:3 to get more depth and then crop.

Critique accepted and advice appreciated. In the attached photos I know that I should have set the ISO at 100 or 200, but it is ISO was 400.
Flash was used with 1/250 shutter speed and aperture set to f/22 or f/29. Nikon D7100 camera with Sigma 105mm macro lens.

Here is a consideration that has a direct impact on a posted images quality; The monitor that the image is being viewed on.

At this forum there is a difference in the quality of the image in the post and the image viewed using the download link. I can also state that there is a difference in the same image viewed with wide-gamut vs sRGB monitors. Both calibrated.

In a quick test, I viewed a recently posted cardinal, turkey, and hummingbird using the download link. In each case there is a noticeable improvement when viewed on the wide-gamut monitor. Also is the screen resolution to consider. The higher resolution displays will show considerably more detail than the older 1920x1080 monitors. In the mentioned images, each has a broader and more vibrant red and green dynamic range.

Maybe Mike has an old TFF monitor that is less than 100% sRGB.
