Is it better to shoot macro with a cropped sensor camera than a full frame camera (all other things being equal) because of the increased depth of field with the smaller sensor?

Depends of how you define better. In my experience a good smartphone camera can be used for pretty good close up or macro ish photography because you can place it very close to the subject and still get a lot of it in focus. This is probably the strongest photographic advantage of a smartphone. And this is all due to the small sensor in a smartphone.
I suggest you give it a try just to experiment and see what you get, it might be a surprisingly good result.

I'm looking for a compact camera that will capture raw files and has removable lenses/or a good optical zoom. I've considered the Nikon 1 J3. I'm just wondering if anybody else has used or experienced such a camera? I look forward to your knowledge on this subject.

I have a Nikon 1 J2 and J5. Like them both. The J5 delivers better colors. If you need a compact gear nothing will beat a Nikon 1 and the glass of your choice. I often travel with the J5 and the kit lens in my jacket pocket and another lens in another pocket. No need for a camera bag for a body and 2-3 lenses if you have a Nikon 1 gear. If you are tight on budget go with the J3, if you can afford more get the J5.

I own a Canon 80 D which has worked well for me. I'm currently living in Peru where there are endless photographic opportunities. I've been thinking that it would be nice to have a single lens which would allow me to travel travel light without having to change lenses so often. I am a serious amateur photographer.

How much would I lose in image quality or is there an acceptable solution? I'd like to spend no more than $1000 US.

What you loose in image quality depends on what kind of image quality is important for you. If you go for a 18-400 Tamron or other superzoom lenses you will loose the soft foregrounds/backrounds you can get when using prime lenses at wide open apertures. And you would loose some ability to take pics in low light. But many recent zooms will deliver sharp images at most of the zoom range so if that is what you need then it is an easy choice. I guess you are not thinking much about night or very low light photography so the zoom lenses should be fine in that regard as well.

So, on a Nikon D850 with a full frame 70-200 lens, if I put it the camera into Dx mode, do I get the 1.5% crop factor on the lens? So the 70-200 becomes a 105-300?

No. You are just cropping your picture in camera. No affect on the lens.

I know that Canon Rebels have a 1.6X cropped sensor, and my Panasonic GX85 has a 2X sensor. But does the FZ1000 (25-400mm) bridge camera utilize a cropped sensor, or is the 25-400mm exactly that.....as it would be on a full frame camera or 35mm camera? I know that the FZ1000 has a full 1" sensor if that's important to you.

Yes, the 1" sensor is a 2.7X crop sensor.

I’ve been shooting Nikon slr since I was 14 (a long time ago) FE,F2A,f100,d100,d700,d4. Years ago I thought about switching to Canon but didn’t over cost of lenses, flashes and so forth. Now I’m thinking of going to mirrorless (size, weight, tech,ISO’s,VIDEO)
It’s clear as mud w full frame, crop, micro 4/3. Looking for a bit more simplicity. I’ve always carried a28-80 and (my fav lenses in the world)80-200 2.8ed. Recently got a prime 300 and 2x for shooting hummers. I love shooting sports and candid. Looking for thoughts on mirrorless. Thanks for feedback!

I started with a Konica in the 80's. Then switched to Nikon and have been shooting Nikon film cameras and D80, D200, D3200, D600 until I decided to try Sony A7r about 3 years ago. For me it is by far the best fit camera for my needs. Would get either the Sony A7iii or A7riii if I was switching today.

Mid April we’re going to visit Italy (First time). We’re planning to stay three days in Rome, three days in Venice and three days in Florence. I have two cameras to choose from for the trip. Nikon D850, And Fuji X 100 F. Fuji would be easier, camera with fixed lens f/2 35 mm equivalent.

For Nikon I have 16-35 f4, 24-70 2.8, 35 1.8, 501.8 and 28-3003.5-5.6.

Any suggestions for a good combination of camera and lenses would be appreciated

Thanks

You will need your widest lens, so if you were to take only one lens for the Nikon it should be the 16-35 lens. If you are mainly in those cities that is about all you need. The Fuji will be of little use with the 35 mm lens.

The worlds smallest full frame 35mm camera. I still have a mint condition 35 S version, made in Singapore.

Yes, it was the smallest 35 mm camera. At least until the Minox 35 came along. I think it is a tad smaller. Would be fun to check the size since I own both the Minox and the Rollei.

I was recently given a Mamiya 645 Pro TL with an 80mm N f/1.9 Mamiya Sekor lens in apparently mint condition

Does anyone out there have a rough idea of what a setup like this might have sold for when new, and what it might sell for nowadays as a used camera in perfect condition? I'm not thinking of parting with it, but I'd like to know this for insurance purposes. Thanks.

A lot of this exakt kit is sold used for $5-600 on Ebay. Some are priced at $8-900. Your camera will fit somwhere in this range.

I am looking to purchase equipment for the following types of pictures that I take. Up close shots of jewelry for my jewelry store (for posting online), landscape shots as I live next to Glacier National Park, indoor gymnasium shots as I have children that are active in sports. I have a budget of approx $6000. I do own a Nikon d300 with 18-200 nikon lens and 35mm 1.8 lens and a nice larger tripod. I have never really liked this camera body and not sure why so am considering trading/selling it. Thanks for any suggestions.

You should look at the new Sony A7iii. It is great for shooting your kids in sports and excellent owerall camera. The price is $2000. You could get a 70-200 lens or 100-400 to get pics of your kids and some landscape shots and choose from a whole bunch of other lenses for the close up shots and landscapes. One of the advantages of this camera is that you can just as well use good old manual glass as modern autofocus glass to use in landscape photography and for the close ups. You could get macro lens for either full frame or Aps-c as you will never need all the resolution of the full frame sensor for your product photos. So you can buy this body and be all set with investment from around $4500 in camera and good glass for your needs without trading in or selling your Nikon gear. Maybe you can get around $1000 by selling that directly on ebay or locally, less if you trade it.

Do you know if they made a change to the LCD, on the K-1, JPL - so it turns all the way around, allowing selfies?

Yes, well ... the a7 Mk. III is already available ...

As is the Fuji X-H1 ... that one looks good, but pricey ... $1900 ... ooof!

Not interested in an M series Canon .... what's the 4000D about?

Well, I am not looking for a new camera so I am not fully updated on the exact ingredients of those new cameras. But the Canon 4000D is by some considered a joke, a 7 y.o. Canon camera that has been given a new name they say. And it is said to be the cheapest entry level camera available. You can get one of them for every day of the week for the price of the Fuji X-H1.

Yes, I was just advised, JPL ... what's new in the K-1 II, do you know?

I'd been thinking more in terms of a new K-3 Mk. III - perhaps?

If the new Sony you were referring to, is the a77 Mk. III ... that won't be around till later in the year, I don't think ...

Been a couple new Fujis already ... XA-5 and XH1 ... are those the ones you mean?

What new Canons are coming down the pike, JPL?

New in the K1, not very much I think. It has mostly minor improvements but the ability for hand held pixel shift high res photos may be a big improvement if it works well.
No, I had the Sony A7III in mind. Seems to be a great camera on the way from Sony.
Yes, I had the Fuji X-H1 in mind.
Canon is all over the media with the new M50 and their latest brilliant camera the 4000D

I remember something about a new Pentax should've appeared, by now. A new Sony, too. What had you heard about?

Pentax K1, a new version was announced a few days ago. Also a new Sony was announced a few days ago and a new Fuji also and 2 new Canon cameras. I think that is quite a good selection of new cameras from last month and nothing to complain about there.
