picasa, you can't get better for free.

Oh yes you can GIMP and DigiKam both leave Picassa in da dust!

Hi wlgoode, thanks for replying. A few people have mentioned gimp, and I understand it to be a great editing software, but looking at it, it seems to do more than I need and looks quite complicated, just at present. I will most probably go for something like gimp at a later date. pip

I was referring to his needs. I use Gimp and CS5 myself but picasa is a good learning tool.

Thanks Andy, you've understood what I was asking for. Something simple to do levels and cropping to start with. Theres plenty of time to get complicated when I understand more :D  cheers ;) pip

Welcome PIP.
PIP, do you shoot a Canon? If so it came with DPP, Canon Digital Photo Professional. It is excellent software, especially for the things you mention. It's free and it works.
If you shoot another brand, they came with something similar, but I don't know anything about them.
People immediately discount the bundled software as something to ignore. I used it for two years and only went to Lightroom(LR) when I started taking classes and it was required. I still use DPP for lmost all work that is not going to galleries, contest or I am trying to sell. Check it out.

Edit: it's probably already on your computer if you loaded all the discs that came with your camera. Look on your desktop.
I still use only the Canon software to download all my raw files.

Thanks SS, I shoot a fuji, the software that came with the camera has some functions but the one I want which is leveling the horizon. Well I cant find it if it does. I have taken on board your comments and will look into it further. Thanks again for your time, its well appreciated  :D pip

These are some of the first shots I took with my new Canon Rebel T3 while on vacation at the beach. Any critique is greatly appreciated as I am new to photography but have always wanted to learn how to take the best shots possible.

All good shots, as far as #3 goes you could always crop it, if you wish too. Well done   pip

The Stork-billed Kingfisher (Pelargopsis capensis) (formerly Halcyon capensis), is a tree kingfisher which is widely but sparsely distributed in the tropical Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia, from India and Sri Lanka to Indonesia. This kingfisher is essentially resident throughout its range.

This is a very large kingfisher, measuring 35 to 38 cm (14 to 15 in) in length.[2] The adult has a green back, blue wings and tail, and grey head. Its underparts and neck are buff. The very large bill and legs are bright red. The flight of the Stork-billed Kingfisher is laboured and flapping, but direct. Sexes are similar. There are 15 races, mostly differing in plumage detail, but P. c. gigantea of the Sulu Islands has a white head, neck and underparts. The call of this noisy kingfisher is a low and far reaching peer-por-por repeated every 5 seconds or so as well cackling ke-ke-ke-ke-ke-ke.

Stork-billed Kingfisher is a species of a variety of well-wooded habitats near lakes, rivers or coasts. It perches quietly whilst seeking food, and is often inconspicuous despite its size. It is territorial and will chase away eagles and other large predators. This species hunts fish, frogs, crabs, rodents and young birds.

Stork-billed Kingfisher digs its nest in a river bank, decaying tree, or a tree termite nest. A clutch of two to five round white eggs is typical.

Have to agree with MalcolmB, though I like it, some may not. Keep it if you feel you should, it is a reminder of a place where you obviously enjoyed the view. Its your reward   pip

I had the opportunity to head out to the coast for Monday and Tuesday. A friend photographer and I thought we would just shoot for fun. Of course, I always shoot for fun. The images are from Ano Nuevo State Park and Moss Landing State Reserve.

I had to say I am a it jealous, but he let me slap one of my camera bodies on his 600mm f4 to get some of the otter shots and the shorebirds. What a gorgeous, if not inconvenient lens to use at times. I did get to play some more with my new 16-35 while on the beach. I wish I had more than a day for these shots. There was so much more to shoot. Hope you enjoy.
