Personally I've come to prefer a Manual setting while shooting an indoor event. That way the camera isn't duped by white dresses or light sources into producing an underexposure. I often begin at asa 800, 1/30@5.6. It depends on the brightness of the interior lighting. I try it and adjust from there.

Todd are u using flash there 1/30th seems a little slow to me unless your using the flash to freeze subject, also do you not find iso 800 is a little grainy, i am new to all this so just asking lots of questions.
thanks

How about just picking up one of Canons famed prime "nifty fifties" for about $100 such as this one ...

That would depend on what you like to shoot.

thanks for the reply, i dont have any particular dislikes i like to shoot just about anything really, i guess if i had to pick a subject it would be portraits but i really do just take anything, so all suggestions would be helpful.
thanks again

You did not tell us what lens(es) and ISO you are using.

If you are suing f4 and f5.6 lenses and bumping up agains noise issues, then you need to upgrade to f2.8 and faster. If you are using a 1.4 now, you are SOL.

Ooops, after I posted I see you indicated some of that.

You are using consumer equipment to do a professional job. Yeah, I know, once again I will be told to not be arrogant and be more humble. Sorry, but the truth is, the 18-55 is not in the ballpark for this kind of work. The 17-55 or 24-70 is what should be on the camera for this.

Even the 50 or 85 1.8 lenses would be far better and those are relatively cheap. Those would give over a three stop advantage.
