I recently purchased a Canon EOS R with the newer RF mount. Great camera but I was surprised at the costs of those lenses. I’m retired on a fixed income so I don’t want to error on a lens purchase.

I’m looking for a lens for wildlife in the 600-800mm range. I’m considering a Canon RF 800mm that I can purchase new for $900 BUT this glass is fixed at f-11.

As background, I typically shoot at f-8 or lower for background blur in nature photography. I also want to step up the quality of my photos.

SO my question - is a fixed aperture lens at f-11 worth buying? Would I be disappointed at the image quality or lack of f-stop control of this lens?

Your constructive feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi-
I am a hobbyist photographer who mainly shoots macro nature (flowers, foliage) and some sea and landscapes) and of course, my 4 kids:))
About a year ago, my employer asked if I would take some mini (15 min session) holiday family portraits, on-site. I work at a beautiful nursery/home decor place, perfect setting for photos. I have continued it this year, purchasing a portrait lens, etc, practicing and learning everything I could about this type of photography. I’ve had a very positive response to the images and have truly enjoyed this genre. They have all been daytime, outdoors, natural light.
My boss just asked if I could run out to her house to take a holiday picture of her, her husband and baby. Because of her work schedule, it has to be nighttime and she would like if outdoors, in front of their new house, with Christmas lights. I said yes, of course, but am panicking because I don’t ever shoot at night. I have a speed light but am not even sure how to use it. I have a Nikon d7200. The speed light I own (Altura) cannot not be set-up for TTL? (just learning about off-camera flash) so has to be manual and I am not sure of the settings I should use. Help! Please be kind. I never use flash and was hoping for a quick lesson so I can get a decent shot for her tonight.
Thank you in advance!

adding a photo from one of the sessions-a new baby! Really have enjoyed capturing these special moments!

Basically see below. Use a reflector and bounce the flash off of it for appropriate light:

Set camera to manual mode.

Manual flash
Shutter speed controls ambient light
Fstop controls flash brightness
ISO makes everything brighter or darker

Start with:
125 ss,f5.6, ISO 100
Power on flash and set to manual mode. Start with quarter power, adjust as needed.

I have the same camera/lens combination and love it!

Save some money and buy used at the link below. I’ve used this company many times and never had a problem. Lenses always look like new.

I just checked on the price of the Canon 100-400 ll lens. Wow $2400. It went up in price. I guess I might buy the new R6 ($2500) and get the 800mm lens ($899). Sell my other equipment. Mirrorless is the future. Being 70 the weight reduction would be welcome?

Buy it at the street price new at $1999 like I did two weeks ago. Not grey market from an authorized canon dealer brand new.

I am thinking about doing some trading and getting one of these lenses. I've read a lot of reviews and it seems to be a very capable lens. Does anyone have one or any comments about his lens? Thanks. It will be a new lens. To be used with a Canon 6D Mark ll or a 90D.

I shot with the mk 1 version of this lens on my 6D for several years and liked it so much that when I recently bought the canon R6 I sold the lens to mpb.com and bought the mk II version. If focuses closer and faster and has better image stabilization. Also I bought my lens new from the link below at "street price" which ended up coming from an authorized canon dealer in Canada (not grey market). Saved me a lot of money and very smooth transaction!

if you have amazon prime like I do then just upload your photos to it and share the link via email to your recipients. They can download the full resolution photos as they like.

I wanted to refer to a prior UHH discussion on camera bags but I can't find it. There were some good recommendations. I'm pretty sure it was this past year. Using the Search, I saw a lot of posts from 2014 and 2015, but I know it was more recent than that. Can anyone help me find that?
In lieu of that, what are your recommendations? I'd like to carry a full frame dlsr with a trinity of lenses. I think a shoulder bag is best for my needs.

I bought and like this one - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072RK5F3X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have the same lens to sell. Interested to know if you are happy with this company to sell mine. Thanks

It’s the company I prefer to deal with. I’ve always been happy with products purchased from them over other similar companies.

Just for your information I'm doing the same thing and mpb.com offered me $635 for mine. It's already been shipped to them for payment.

Get either a tablo or Fire TV Recast. They have two sizes of each. Two tuners or four tuners which allow more recordings while watching recorded material. They both work with antenna and broadcast over wifi to multiple TVs.

You will need a fire stick for each tv if using the Recast to receive the signal. Tablo needs a streaming device to use the tablo app which connects to the tablo DVR over wifi.

Sorry, but with respect, I can’t agree with that. While some of the new RF series lenses are state-of-the art and maybe a bit better, EF lenses work well (and flawlessly) with the new R bodies used with any of the 3 Canon supplied adapters. There are many excellent L series and special purpose lenses (such as T&S) that there is yet no equivalent in the RF series, and they produce just as good a results on the R series as they did on the EOS series bodies.

plus the R6 adds image stabilization to EF lenses which may not have it built in.

I've been researching this camera and just for the image stabilization, focusing and ISO performance I think this is a big step up. Cropping doesn't seem to be a problem as well. I've been shooting with the 6D which also has a 20 MP sensor and never has any issues cropping.
