I'm an amateur. Have enjoyed photography since '84 when I bought my first camera (AE1-program). Current lenses: 23mm and 18-55mm. Looking now for a telephoto for beach (boats, birds, fisherman, etc.) My max price is $500. Might print on occassion up to 24x36. Can get Fuji's XF55-200 at today's national sale price of $499. My question: Rather than pay $400 for 200mm, would there be a camera (with built in lens) at comparable cash outlay I might consider that offers much greater reach? Thank you experts!

Yes, but likely with smaller sensors.

You already have several lenses for the Fuji, and the 55-200 is a logical choice. You’re next upgrade might be something like trading up the X-E2 to an X-T2 at a cost of ~$400. What you really need to decide is if you like and will stay with the Fuji system, which is about as good as it gets for APS-C size sensors.

Appreciate reply! Thanks. What does the XT-2 offer versus my humble X-E2S?

Not knocking the X-E2 - had one, but you get a lot for that $400, including 24MP vs 16MP, 14 FPS vs 7, weather sealing, anti-flicker, tilting view screen, dual card slots, 4K video, 325 focus pts vs 49, etc, etc. Just something to think about for the future as you allocate your $.

With that camera I have used an XC 50 -230 which has optical stabilisation but needs good light to function at its best. It delivers perfectly acceptable pix and has a good reach. Might satisfy your needs while considering the camera upgrade.

Invest in good lenses. They last forever. Every few years there is a new camera model.

The 55-200 is a terrific lens. Buy it. At the current deal, it's a steal. This video will give you some useful information https://www.andymumford.com/blog/2019/3/28/fujifilm-50-140mm-amp-55-200mm-telephoto-comparison-for-landscape-photography-video.

Sure you can get cameras with longer telephotos generally with tiny sensors. Personally I would not go that route.

I have the XE2 it's a great camera. I have the XT2 as well. I love the 16MP sensor in the XE2 (and XT1 if you want a tougher body with a tilting screen - I have one too)it produces magical images.

I can't justify buying the 55-200 at thee moment as I have the 18-135 which is my most used lens. You could buy a vintage M/F Zoom and mount it with an adaptor if you want more reach - there should be a 70-300 out there from Nikon, Canon etc....

Good luck.

I would also recommend the xc glass I have the 50-230 got it used for around $230 if memory serves me. I upgraded my xe1 to a xt10 for around $250. The xc glass is very good just not as nice a container as the xf.

You can buy a Fuji XC 50-230mm used for less than $200. It is an excellent lens for the money.

I agree that the 55-200 is a terrific lens. I also own the 50-140 f/2.8 and before seeing Andy Mumford’s comparison video I ran my own sharpness tests and found the 55-200 to be as sharp at f/8 or f/11, and you have to be a pixel peeper to tell the difference at other apertures. Like Mumford I prefer the 55-200 over the 50-140 for landscape. When shooting events I switch to the 50-140 for lower light situations and faster AF.

I would recommend buying this lens, especially while on sale, and keeping your present body. Good glass will deliver better results than bigger sensors on inferior glass.

I have a 55-200mm lens and an XT-2. The lens is terrific. It gave me the reach I wanted and I, as an amateur, find my results sharp and clear. I wish I had been able to get mine for that price.

I bought a used 55-200mm to go with my X-T3 and found out why the person sold it. It was very soft at both ends. Interestingly the 100-400mm I bought new had the same issue. I sent that in to Fuji repair and they replaced some of the elements. It remained soft at 400mm. My 10-24mm and 18-55mm are both sharp so I know Fuji is capable of making good zoom lenses. My recommendation is buy the 55-200mm from a dealer that has a good return policy in case you need to exchange it. A sharp 55-200mm is well worth $499.

I have the same camera/lens combination and love it!

Save some money and buy used at the link below. I’ve used this company many times and never had a problem. Lenses always look like new.
