This happened about 30 years ago. My wife and I took the train to Silverton and had made reservations to stay overnight in a bed and breakfast. Turned out that the B&B was a downtown bakery/restaurant with bedrooms on the second floor. But all the rooms were taken. (So much for a reservation!) The owner then took us in his jeep to the edge of town, stopped by a nice, new-looking house, handed us the keys, told us we would be the only people there, and drove off.

We picked out our room and settled in for the night. Then we heard a noise. We looked at each other. A minute or so later, we heard another noise. We went downstairs, looked over the entire floor plan, found nothing, checked the doors which all were locked on the inside, and sat down -- by then just a bit on edge. Was our B&B haunted? And then, we heard the shower in the bathroom turn on. Figuring ghosts don't take showers, we went to the bathroom door and knocked. From inside came a voice, “Be out in a minute.)

The voice turned out to belong to the owner's handyman, who lived in a downstairs room which had a movable panel for a door, and who the owner had failed to mention.

Be prepared for a great view early in the trip as the train hugs the mountainside with the river far, far below. With a wide angle, you can include the train with the canyon bottom. Be on scene early and get shots of the engines puffing around. Crewmen are very helpful -- I got a video from inside the cab of a fireman scooping coal into the firebox to show preparation for the trip. At Silverton the train goes by the station before it stops, but it's a short walk back to get a photo of one of the other two trains coming in.

A Washington D.C. hotel lounge (Can't recall name of hotel.) Was with a group and needed pics of their activities. Set up a very small Kodak 828 folding camera (no more than 3-inches high) on a table in darkened room during floor show, took one shot, got tap on the shoulder and a whispered "Don't do that."

The Biltmore house in Asheville NC. I didn't see the sign. Got some good shot though.

Hmmm. I shot there with no problems. ~1960s.

I can't see "Download" So - going another route - what did you do to change the photo to your satisfaction?

I tried three times to get the "Download" to show and it never did. Changes were all minor. As you noted, more contrast, darker overall, but then with a lightening of shadows.

Yes. That is what I thought you were asking.

A few of us have been posting links to Flickr or other sites here as an alternative approach. CHG_CANON (Paul) got me started on that. He has an excellent post here about working with digital images:

The UHH member orionmystery (Kurt) posts with links to his Flickr account:

Not if you are referring to the thumbnail (pre-download) image as the "posted" one, you have it!.

Thanks everyone. I get it now -- the posted image has been downgraded by UHH software and the downloaded image is back to what the original looked like on our own computer. Hope this is not too ambiguous.

Dumb question: What is done to an image when it is downloaded here in UHH that makes it look so much better, and why can't we do that in Photoshop before we post it?

Thought I had. Will try again. Thanks.

Jim -- Nice set of 43-year-old photos. I took the liberty of working on one image in the hope of improving it. Please let me know if I did, or not. I did this because I have always had trouble deciding what is the best image of my own photos!

Check out Office Max/Depot. I have done two family history books with them, using MS Publisher. Color or B&W. Lots of photos. Choice of bindings. About 60 pages in each. Simple to do -- layout in Publisher, take to Office Max on thumb drive or memory card, pick it up same day all done.
